New South Wales in June 2007
East Coast Lows batter NSW Coast

Summary

  • 5 East Coast Low events off the NSW coast
  • 2nd coldest June on record for statewide average maximum temperatures
  • 2nd coldest June on record for statewide average mean temperatures
  • 7th coldest June on record for statewide average minimum temperatures
  • Above to very much above average rainfall across much of the coast and adjacent ranges

Rainfall

Five east coast low events off the NSW coast brought significant rainfall to much of the NSW coast and adjacent ranges, and resulted in major flooding across much of the Central Coast, lower Hunter and the Goulburn area of the Southern Tablelands. Very much above average rainfall was recorded along the coast, from the Hunter to the South Coast, and in northern parts of the Central Tablelands, with some locations recording their highest June rainfall on record (see table below). Average to above average rainfall was recorded across the remainder of the coast (north of the Hunter), in the Northern Tablelands and in parts of the Southern Tablelands. However, despite this significant rainfall in the east, average to below average rainfall was recorded west of the ranges, with very much below average rainfall recorded in the far west of the state.

The statewide average rainfall for June 2007 was 59.8 mm, which is higher than the historical average1 of 35.9 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 38.2 mm, compared to the historical average of 30.9 mm.

The above average rainfall experienced in coastal regions is consistent with a trend towards La Niña conditions. A cooling Pacific and sustained high SOI values (near +10 or higher) are usually associated with wetter than average seasons over eastern and northern Australia, even if La Niña thresholds are not reached. More information and updates on La Niña can be found at the Bureau's ENSO Wrap-up page.

Some sites had their highest total June rainfall on record.

Some sites had their lowest total June rainfall on record.

Temperature

Having experienced a warmer than average autumn, June saw a cold start to winter with below average temperatures experienced across much of NSW. This trend was largely a result of the east coast lows and upper cold pools that affected the state during the month.

Maximum temperatures were below average across much of the state, with areas in the far north/northwest, and in central parts of the northeast experiencing their lowest maximum temperatures on record. The statewide average mean maximum temperature was 14.4°C, which is 1.7°C below the historical average1 of 16.1°C, making this the second coldest June on record for statewide average maximum temperatures (current record for June is 14.3°C, set in 1956).

June minimum temperatures were also below average across much of the state. The far west recorded very much below average minimum temperatures, with Cobar Meteorological Office recording it's lowest average minimum temperature for June on record (3.8°C). The only area to record slightly above average minimum temperatures was in the far northeast of the state in an area bordering Queensland. The statewide average minimum temperature was 3.6°C, which is 1.0°C below the historical average of 4.6°C, making this the seventh coldest June on record for statewide average minimum temperatures.

The statewide average mean temperature (the average of the maximum and minimum temperature) was 8.9°C, which is 1.4°C below the historical average of 10.3°C, making this the second coldest June on record for statewide average mean temperatures (current record for June is 8.8°C, set in 1982).

Some sites had their coldest June day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Some sites had their lowest June mean daily maximum temperature on record.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their lowest June temperature on record.

Some sites had their lowest June mean daily minimum temperature on record.

See a map of mean minimum temperatures. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Other phenomena

Snow fell on the Southern Tablelands on the 14th and 26th June. The heaviest falls occurred on the 14th June where 20 - 30cm of snow was reported in the Captain's Flat, Bungendore and Jerangle areas. Snow was also reported in some high areas of the Central Tablelands on the 14th and 19th June and the Northern Tablelands on the 9th June.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 July 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a
ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest)
then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would
be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals
(highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages
: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World
Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which
vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for
temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
