New South Wales in July 2007
Below average rainfall, near normal temperatures

Summary

  • Drier conditions return to much of the state
  • Near normal statewide average maximum temperatures
  • Near normal statewide average minimum temperatures

Rainfall

Despite hopes of developing La Niña conditions, July saw a return to below average rainfall across much of New South Wales, particularly the central and northern half of the state, which experienced below to very much below average rainfall. Southern and coastal areas (south of the Metropolitan), were the only areas of the state to experience close to average rainfall.

The statewide average rainfall for July 2007 was 15.1 mm, which is lower than the historical average1 of 38.6 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 17.8 mm, compared to the historical average of 39.3 mm.

A series of cold fronts early in the month was responsible for much of the rainfall across the far south and coastal areas of the state. Moist onshore flow from several low pressure systems in the Tasman Sea also contributed to rainfall along the coast.

Despite the below average rainfall over much of NSW in July, computer models (current as of 1st August 2007) are still predicting moderate cooling of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean in the next month or two, and a moderate chance of a La Niña occurring in 2007. Even if La Niña thresholds are not met, cooler than average waters in the central to eastern Pacific are usually associated with average to wetter than average seasons over eastern and northern Australia, especially if accompanied by positive SOI values. More information and updates on La Niña can be found at the Bureau's ENSO Wrap-up page.

Some sites had their lowest total July rainfall on record.

Temperature

Having experienced record cold temperatures in June, much of NSW saw a return to near normal temperatures in July.

Maximum temperatures were close to average across much of the state, with a small area in the far south and central/northern inland the only areas that were slightly below average. The statewide average maximum temperature was 15.5°C, which is 0.2°C above the historical average1 of 15.3°C.

Minimum temperatures were below average in the west and north of the state, and about average elsewhere. The below average temperatures experienced in the western and northern regions can be attributed to the clear skies and westerly wind flow that persisted over much of the state during July. The statewide average minimum temperature was 3.2°C, which is 0.3°C below the historical average of 3.5°C.

Some sites had their highest July temperature on record.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their lowest July temperature on record.

Some sites had their lowest July mean daily minimum temperature on record.

See a map of mean minimum temperatures. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Other phenomena

Snow fell on the Central Tablelands on the 17th July. The heaviest fall was reported at Black Springs, where 10cm of snow was reported. Other snow amounts included 4cm at Millthorpe and 2cm at Orange and Oberon.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 July 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a
ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest)
then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would
be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals
(highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages
: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World
Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which
vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for
temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
