Hydrologic Reference Stations data update 2015
Introduction
Hydrologic Reference Stations (HRS) was released to the public in June 2013, using data collected up to December 2012. The tools and systems used to extract data have significantly changed since 2013 (Figure 1). To ensure currency of the website, HRS data is updated every second year and website enhancements undertaken.

Comparison of published HRS and present data sets
Of the 221 HRS catchments, data for 200 catchment data sets were obtained from the Bureau's streamflow time series manager (Water Information System Kisters, WISKI). Data for the remaining 21 catchments were obtained from the relevant agencies or from the Bureau's raw data file repository. For the 200 WISKI data sets, 40 sites were identified by the Bureau to have significant differences between the current WISKI data and the 2012 HRS data. In assessing the data in the 2012 HRS web portal, the most recent data provided by the water agency was taken as the point of truth. Based on the observed differences for a common period the Bureau adopted an acceptance criterion. Under this criterion, a data set was considered acceptable if 90% of the monthly flows in WISKI were within 2% of the monthly estimates based on the most recent data uploaded from the agency.
Causes of differences
Four main reasons were identified that explained the differences between 2012 HRS datasets and updated HRS datasets:
- Data had not yet been validated.
- Inconsistency in the uploading procedure between the agency and BoM.
- Errors in procedure adopted in WISKI.
- Inconsistency in the extrapolation of the rating curve between WISKI and that used by the agency.
Adopted data set
Once these inconsistencies and errors were addressed, the WISKI data for 196 catchments were found to be within the acceptance criterion and were accepted for incorporation in the updated HRS web portal. For the remaining four stations (2 sites: 116011A, 926002A in Queensland; 1 site: G0010005 in Northern Territory; and 1 site: 235205 in Victoria), the data supplied by the agencies was adopted.
For the 21 stations not in WISKI, the latest data from the agencies or data available through the Bureau's raw data file repository were adopted in the upgraded web portal.
Finally, one additional station in NSW (data was provided by the agency) was included in the upgraded HRS data set bringing the total to222 catchments.
Table 1 shows a comparison between the existing and updated data. The table includes mean daily flow for these data sets (excluding periods with data gaps) and the percentage differences. Two sites - 408200 in Victoria and A5050517 in South Australia - showed large differences between 2012 data and updated data. These differences were attributed to errors in rating curves. The percentage differences in mean daily flow for the 2012 and updated data sets are shown in Figure 2. For nearly 90% of sites these differences are below 1%. The state-wide distribution of the differences in mean daily flow is shown in Figure 3.
