National Water Account 2015

Sydney: Region overview

The region includes metropolitan Sydney, the most populous city in Australia. It comprises the Shoalhaven and Hawkesbury–Nepean river catchments, the Illawarra catchment and all the catchments of the rivers that flow through the Sydney metropolitan area. The region’s water requirement is mainly for urban water supply and agriculture, which is serviced by an extensive surface water storage network that includes Burragorang (Warragamba) reservoir with over two million megaliters of storage capacity. The Kurnell Desalination Plant is available to supplement water if a need arises.
