Friday, 1 December 2006 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC27R0
Spring was punctuated with extremes of heat, cold and windy days -
but
overall it was the lack of rain that was the dominant feature of the
season. Although September
rain was near normal, both October
and November
were well down in terms of rainfall, especially the north coast which
had its driest spring on record. This comes on top of an
exceptionally dry winter,
a
locally dry autumn
and even a dry start to
the year, making the 11-month rainfall from January to November well
below average.
Jump to: Extremes Records Summaries Notes the top
Spring rains fail: Apart from September, a lack of
significant rain bearing systems contributed to the very low rainfall
totals over the state for spring. Many sites, especially in the north
have had their lowest spring
rainfall for at
least 20 years,
while many sites along the north coast and northern Midlands have
had their driest spring
on record. Apart from the
southwest, rainfall statewide was well below average, with many sites
in the north, east and southeast receiving less than 100 mm for the
three months.
A very dry year so far: The dry spring in the north continues a pattern that has dominated the year for Tasmania. Many sites in the north, Midlands and southeast have had their driest January-to-November on record. Some (including Burnie) are almost certain to have their driest-ever year, as they are so much drier than their previous driest. Many others (including Hobart) are close to having their driest year, but could miss that record if they have a wet December.
Extreme weather: Extreme and unusual weather was common in spring. In late September, very strong winds caused localised damage to property around the state, with gusts in excess of 100 km/h not uncommon, Maatsuyker Island recording an astounding 174 km/h. October was also quite extraordinary with many temperature records being broken. Two very hot days on the 11th and 12th of October (and a very warm night between) with strong winds and bushfires were followed only a week later by an extremely cold morning on the 16th and again on the 26th with severe frosts. Hail and snow were then reported on the 27th and 28th. November was another month of extremes with a cold outbreak on the 15th bringing snow and hail to low levels, and severe late season frosts especially toward the end of the month.
Cold nights but close to normal daytime temperatures: Spring nights were chilly, especially in October and November where there were quite a few days of cold southwesterly winds and some cold clear nights. Apart from a patch of slightly warmer than average overnight temperatures in the southeast (including Hobart), temperatures were up to 1°C cooler over most districts. It was even cooler in the southwest and northeast, where overnight minimums were up to 1.5°C below average. The combination of some extremely hot days coupled with some very cold days resulted in close to normal daytime temperatures. It was about half a degree above average in the north, east and south of the state with the coastal fringes of the east coast a little warmer still. In contrast, it was cooler in the west and south by about half a degree.50:50 outlook for summer: The Bureau of Meteorology's
Seasonal Outlook for the summer of 2006/07 shows a neutral outlook for both
rainfall
and temperatures.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at noon on Friday 1 December 2006. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The Rank indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
