Method
The total flow volume was obtained by summing the 2011–12 year streamflow from gauging stations on most major rivers in the Adelaide region including the Gawler, Torrens, Little Para and Onkaparinga rivers. Each gauging station monitors stream height, which is converted to a flow volume using a rating table. Streamflow data were obtained from the following sources:

Records ended at 31 August 2010 for the following gauge stations: A5011007, A5011010 and A5011011. Data gaps for these stations were filled as follows:
- The ratio of total flow for the 2011–12 year over the 2010–11 year was calculated for all stations less the three stations having no record in the 2011–12 year.
- That ratio was multiplied by the values for the 2010–11 year reported in the 2011 Account for the three stations with no record to estimate their 2011–12 volumes.
Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations
- Streamflow data were not available for all major rivers. The Myponga River is the most significant omission; it is not measured downstream of the Myponga Reservoir.
- Streamflow records for some stream gauges were only available for part of the reporting period.
- The variation of flows between the 2010–11 year and the 2011–12 year for the three stations having no record in the 2011–12 year and are assumed to be the same as the average variation over the whole region.
- The rating table used to obtain the flow volume from the measured water level is assumed to hold for the full range of the measured water level.
