Adelaide
18.11 Entitled extraction of allocated groundwater to users
Supporting information
The volume of groundwater extracted under water licences during 2011–12 was 17,379 ML. The groundwater extraction volume increased compared to the previous reporting period (2010–11: 15,019 ML). Licences were issued for the first time during the 2011-12 year on Dry Creek Prescribed Wells Area (PWA) for industrial salt production. In previous years, extractions in Dry Creek PWA were made under a notice of prohibition. The table below details the groundwater extractions by prescribed areas and whether they were metered or not.

Quantification approach
Data source
South Australian Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR): Water Information and Licence Management Administration System (WILMA) database.
Provided by
South Australian Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR).
Method
Barossa Prescribed Water Resources Area (PWRA)
Metered extraction was obtained from the WILMA licensing database. Non–metered extractions were estimated by DEWNR.
The non-metered extractions in the Barossa PWRA were calculated by comparing meter readings with allocations to determine the average level of water taken. The average was applied to the allocations where meter readings were not available and used to determine the usage amount.
Non-metered water allocated for the purpose of stock and domestic was estimated at 100% usage of the allocation.
McLaren Vale Prescribed Wells Area (PWA)
Metered extraction was obtained from the WILMA licensing database. Non–metered extractions were estimated by DEWNR.
The non-metered extractions in the McLaren Vale PWA were calculated by comparing meter readings with allocations to determine the average level of water taken. The average was applied to the allocations where meter readings were not available and used to determine the usage amount.
Non-metered water allocated for the purpose of stock and domestic was estimated at 100% usage of the allocation.
Northern Adelaide Plains PWA
Metered extraction was obtained from the WILMA licensing database. Non–metered extractions were estimated by DEWNR.
The non-metered extractions in the Northern Adelaide Plains PWA were calculated by comparing meter readings with allocations to determine the average level of water taken. The average was applied to the allocations where meter readings were not available and used to determine the usage amount.
Non-metered water allocated for the purpose of stock and domestic was estimated at 100% usage of the allocation.
Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations
The assumptions made to calculate non-metered diversions (see 'Method') were validated by DEWNR water licensing staff members.
