21.1 Surface water allocation announcements
Supporting information
In the Adelaide region, surface water allocations are recognised when there are water licences issued on the surface water resource (watercourse water).
During the 2011–12 year the volume of allocated surface water increased by 3,412 ML. It consisted of:
- North Para River and tributaries, included in the Barossa Prescribed Water Resources Area (PWRA): 2,774 ML
- Little Para River Prescribed Watercourse (PWC): 638 ML.
Surface water allocations are renewed each reporting period where the full allocation volume detailed on the user's licence is available for the user to divert. Surface water allocations were all volumetric. Their purposes are detailed in the tables below.
Purposes | Volume (ML) |
Environmental gardens | 40 |
Industrial | 233 |
Irrigation | 2,500 |
Stock and domestic | 1 |
Total | 2,774 |
The volume of surface water allocated in the Barossa PWRA for irrigation is 2,540 ML (irrigation and environmental gardens purposes) or 92% of the total surface water allocated in that area.
Purposes | Volume (ML) |
Irrigation | 635 |
Recreational | 1 |
Stock and domestic | 2 |
Total | 638 |
The volume of surface water allocated for irrigation on the Little Para River PWC is 636 ML (irrigation and recreational purposes) or 100% of the total surface water allocated on that watercourse.
For more information on this surface water liability see 5.1 Surface water allocation remaining.
Quantification approach
Data source
South Australian Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR): Water Information and Licence Management Administration (WILMA) database.
Provided by
DEWNR.
Method
Surface water allocations for the 2011–12 year were extracted from the WILMA database.
Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations
The licence purpose information reflects the purpose of the licence when issued or possibly when adjusted.
Uncertainty information
Comparative year
In the 2011 Account, the volume for the Little Para PWC was excluded from this line item. The inclusion of that watercourse for the 2012 Account gives more complete information to the National Water Account users. The 2010–11 value has been restated in the 2012 Account as shown in the table below.
Prescribed water resource | 2012 Account volume for the 2010–11 year (ML) |
2011 Account volume for the 2010–11 year (ML) |
