3.3 Recycled water system

The volume reported (17 ML) includes water held in the recycled main pipes network owned by SA Water. There was minimal new recycled water pipe construction in the 2011–12 year, hence the opening and closing balances reported (17 ML) are the same.

GIS analysis was used to identify recycled water pipes within the Adelaide region. The volume of water in these pipes were estimated from their total capacity.

The volumes of water held in pipes were estimated from pipe lengths and nominal diameters (stored in the Maximo system) using the following formula:

π x (D/2) x (D/2) x PL

D = Nominal diameter of the pipe

PL = Pipe length.

Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations

  • Pipes were assumed to be 100% full in winter.
  • Pipes without recorded construction dates were assumed to have been constructed before the 2011–12 year.
  • Recycled water schemes not managed by SA Water, such as the Virginia Pipeline Scheme, were not included in estimated volumes.

Uncertainty information

The uncertainty estimate is not quantified.

Comparative year

This line item corresponds to line item 3.3 'Recycled water supply system' reported in the 2011 Account.

A revised value was provided for the volume stored in the recycled water mains at 30 June 2011, due to data quality improvement processes. As the difference is material, the volume has been restated from 10 ML (as published in the 2011 Account) to 17 ML.
