The volume recognised in the water accounting statements (13,108 ML) represents the volume of groundwater assumed to recharge the sedimentary and fractured rock aquifers in the region during the 2011–12 year.

Method
The volume of groundwater recharge is estimated to be equal to the extraction from groundwater in the region
during the 2011–12 year.
Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations
The estimate assumes that the annual extraction from groundwater in the region is sustainable.
An expansion of the monitoring bore network and improved understanding of aquifer extent, aquifer properties and groundwater processes are required to adequately quantify the flow of groundwater in the region.
