14.1 Adjustment and forfeiture of groundwater allocation
The volume presented in the water accounting statements (30,626 ML) represents the volume of groundwater allocation that was not extracted from groundwater management units in the Melbourne region during the 2010–11 year.
If less than the allocation volume is extracted, the remaining volume is not carried over to the following year, and is subsequently forfeited. As carry-over of groundwater allocation is not permitted, the allocated volumes not extracted by the end of the 2010–11 year were forfeited.
The volume of forfeitures was very high (75% of the total allocation) as extracted volumes were very low due to the wet year.
This item corresponds to subcategories of line item 28.1 Adjustment and forfeiture of groundwater allocation reported in the 2010 Account. In the 2011 Account, presentation of the line items has changed since the 2010 Account, which has caused the 2009–10 year value to be restated. Line items 28.1.3 Adjustment and forfeiture of groundwater allocation and 28.1.1 Adjustment and forfeiture stock and domestic class were merged into a single line item: 14.1 Adjustment and forfeiture of groundwater allocation.
The comparative year volume is 18,446 ML and is the sum of volumes reported at line items 28.1.3 (0 ML) and 28.1.1 (18,446 ML).
