South East Queensland
17.7 Entitled diversion of non–allocated surface water to users

Supporting information

The volumetric value for the line item at the end of the 2011–12 year was 2,049 ML.

This line item includes:

  •  water licence diversions for stock and domestic use
  • unsupplemented surface water licence/allocation diversions
  • riparian entitlement diversions within water supply schemes (WSSs).

The stock and domestic, and riparian entitlement diversions in the South East Queensland (SEQ) region can be seen in the following table.

Riparian entitlement diversions were not available for Central Brisbane River, Cressbrook Creek and Pine Valleys WSSs. These represent unsupplemented entitlement diversions within the supplemented WSSs.

Quantification approach

Data source

Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) Water Management System database.

Provided by

DNRM.

Method

An estimate has been made of the water licences for stock and domestic use of water within the SEQ region. The total number of properties with water licences for stock and domestic use was multiplied by an assumed diversion rate of 2 ML per property to obtain an estimate of the volume abstracted.

Riparian entitlement diversions were obtained from interim resource operation licence (IROL) holders by DNRM.

Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations

The assumed diversion rate of 2 ML per property may not be appropriate for all users and adds uncertainty to the estimated value.

Uncertainty information

Derived from estimated data. The uncertainty estimate was not quantified.

Comparative year

An error was made calculating the 2010-11 year volume published in the 2011 Account due to the number of  water licences for stock and domestic for Moreton should have been 292 instead of 309. This error has been corrcetd in the 2012 Account. Consequently, the volume has been restated from 2,050 ML (as published in the 2011 Account) to 2,016 ML.
