South East Queensland
1.1 Storages

Supporting information

The volumetric value for the line item at the end of the 2011–12 year was 2,479,671 ML.

This line item represents the volume of water held in storages that are used mainly to administer water against entitlements. The volume reported for this line item also includes the volume of dead storage.

The volume reported in the water accounting statements represents the sum of the volumes held in the storages in the South East Queensland (SEQ) region. Specific details of individual storages are provided in the following table.

Notes:

1 Total storage capacity does not include flood mitigation capacity. The volume in storage may be greater than the total storage capacity if the storage was retaining flood waters or spilling at the time of measurement.

2  Hinze Dam stage 3 upgrade was completed in late 2011. The project raised the dam wall by approximately 15 metres and increased storage capacity from 161,073 ML to 310,730 ML.

3 Data obtained from the Bureau of Meteorology's Water storages, Australian Water Resources Information System (AWRIS).

4 Despite being located within the SEQ region, Beaudesert Weir, with a total storage capacity of 9,130 ML was not included in the 2012 Account as information was not available on storage volumes for the 2011–12 year.

5 Data obtained from Toowoomba Regional Council.

6 Splityard Creek Dam volume at 30/6/2012 was not available; used volume at 29/6/2012.

Quantification approach

Data source

The Bureau, AWRIS; Seqwater data for Mt Crosby Weir, Cedar Grove Weir, Bromelton Off-Stream Storage and Wyaralong Dam.

Provided by

The Bureau; Seqwater.

Method

Storage-volume is measured at the start and end of the 2011–12 year by using gauged water level height(s) for individual storages. The height measurement was converted to a volume using the storage-volume curve(s) of the storage.

The storage volumes of individual storages were aggregated to present the total volume for the line item.

Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations

Storage-volume (rating) tables are constructed from surveyed parts of the water storage, and may not reflect the storage-volume relationship across the entire storage.

Water storages are subject to sedimentation and other physical changes over time that affect the accuracy of the storage-volume tables.

Uncertainty information

The uncertainty estimate was not quantified.

Comparative year

An error was made when calculating the 2010–11 year volume published in the 2011 Account due to the erroneous volume reported for Mount Crosby Weir. This error has been corrected in the 2012 Account. Consequently, the volume has been restated from 2,220,401 ML (as published in the 2011 Account) to 2,219,099 ML.

The total storage capacities of Moogerah, Gold Creek and Lake Manchester were incorrect in the 2011 Account. Consequently, the total storage capacity for the SEQ region is stated as 2,593,703 ML.
