South East Queensland
2.1 Water table aquifer

Supporting information

The volumetric value for the line item at the end of the 2011–12 year was 9,340 ML.

This line item represents the maximum entitled volumetric limit of medium priority interim water allocation that can be extracted from Implementation Area 1 of the Benefitted Area of groundwater in the Central Lockyer Water Supply Scheme (Moreton Water Resource Account 2011). Detailed modelling of the groundwater resource has been undertaken to determine a sustainable extraction limit for Implementation Area 1. This sustainable extraction limit has been included as the groundwater asset. The entitled maximum volume extractable from the Non-Benefitted Area of the Central Lockyer WSS cannot be quantified, as a volumetric limit is yet to be established.

Groundwater aquifers do occur elsewhere within the South East Queensland (SEQ) region; however, there are currently no models for these, and long-term extractable limits have not been calculated or set. Therefore the water asset of these aquifers could not be quantified in a way that is complete, neutral and free from material error, and is not included in the water accounting statements. Aquifers within the SEQ region that at this time could not be quantified accurately and were therefore not included in the water accounting statements are:

  • Cressbrook Creek Alluvial Groundwater Management Area (GMA)
  • Lockyer Valley GMA
  • Warrill–Bremer Alluvial GMA
  • Watercourse Buffer Zone GMA.

 Lockyer Valley GMA includes:

  • Implementation Area 2: Flagstone Creek Alluvium, Ma Ma Creek Alluvium, Tenthill Creek Alluvium and Upper Lockyer Creek Alluvium
  • Implementation Area 3: Sandy Creek Alluvium and Upper Laidley Creek Alluvium
  • Implementation Area 4: Buaraba Creek Alluvium and Lower Lockyer Creek Alluvium.

All the above listed aquifers are located within the Moreton Water Resource Plan (WRP) area. No GMAs are located within the Logan Basin WRP area or the Gold Coast WRP area.

Provided by

DNRM.

Method

The entitled maximum volume extractable from the Benefitted Area of the Central Lockyer WSS was provided by DNRM. Detailed groundwater modelling of the Benefitted Area of the Central Lockyer aquifer has been undertaken by DNRM to determine the sustainable volumetric limit for extractions.

Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations

This line item is applicable to the Implementation Area 1 of the Central Lockyer GMA.

Uncertainty information

There was no uncertainty associated with this value. The maximum entitled volumetric limit of medium priority interim water allocation that can be extracted from Implementation Area 1 of the Benefitted Area of groundwater in the Central Lockyer Valley Water Supply Scheme was confirmed.
