Tropical Cyclone Jack

Summary

Tropical Cyclone Jack moved entirely over open waters in the Indian Ocean.

A tropical low formed northeast of Cocos Islands on 13 February. It tracked to the west southwest passing to the north of Cocos Is on 14 February. Tropical Cyclone intensity was estimated late on 14 February reaching category 2 intensity on 15 February. Jack began tracking to the west during 16 February and passed west of 90E early on 17 February. Jack became a Severe Tropical Cyclone on before moving west of 80°E and was renamed 'Io' by the Mauritius Meteorological Service.

Cocos Island reported heavy rain and thunderstorms from 14 to early on 15 February when Jack was west of the island. The island recorded a daily fall of 33 mm on 15 February. Cocos Is also recorded winds to 60 km/h on 14 February.

Note: During this era the Australian region extended west to 80°E.
