Kevin was the last cyclone of the 1978-79 season. Its origin was about 830 km north of Cocos Island. During the first half of its lifetime it moved in a west-southwest direction, then recurved towards the east-southeast. Recurvature again occurred during 10 May 1979 and the system weakened after 11 May 1979.
Kevin does not appear to have been intense, and the central pressure was probably above 985 hPa throughout its lifetime. Ship reports indicated winds of 65 to 75 km/h some distance from the centre.
