Tropical Cyclone Leah

3 - 11 March 1973

Summary

Cyclone Leah was the sixth cyclone to affect the Northwestern Region. The system originally developed in the Northeastern Australian Region and moved inland over the Northern territory where it weakened. However a distinct low persisted and continued to move westward. Redevelopment began after a system had recrossed the coast and was once again moving over tropical waters.

Leah was a small cyclone of only moderate intensity. The ship Malaysiah experienced winds of 89 km/h when close to the centre of 5th March. Satellite evidence indicates that at about this time Leah was nearing its maximum intensity.
