Summary
Tropical cyclone Nina developed in the Gulf of Carpentaria prior to Christmas and crossed the Cape York coast south of Weipa on Christmas day. Nina then emerged off the east coast into the Coral Sea moving in a general easterly direction. On New Years Day Nina passed over Rennell Island (Solomon Islands) as a severe cyclone before weakening in subsequent days.
