Summary
A low to the east of the Solomon Islands was analysed from 21 May. The low was embedded in the Southwest Pacific Convergence Zone. By 24 May it drifted west over the Solomon Sea as the Near Equatorial Trough became more prominent. The low remained in the area with moderate support from upper level divergence. Upia was named late on 25 May but only produced gale force winds. Initially it tracked slowly southwest, remained stationary for a brief period, and then started moving southeast. It weakened into a tropical depression on 27 May.
Only Budelun Island (9.3S 153.7E) was affected by Upia , reporting large seas and 30/40 knot south-easterly winds early on 27 May.
