16.5.1 Groundwater allocation extraction – S&D water access entitlement

Supporting information

The volume recognised in the water accounting statements (9,384 ML) represents stock and domestic groundwater entitlement, which is assumed to equal the extraction within groundwater management units in the Melbourne region.

The table below shows the breakdown of stock and domestic groundwater volumes extracted from Groundwater Management Units within the Melbourne region.

Quantification approach

Data source

Southern Rural Water: Irrigation Planning Module Generation 2 database.

Data provider

Southern Rural Water.

Method

The volume of groundwater extraction was assumed to equal the full entitlement.

Uncertainty

Estimated uncertainty is ungraded.

Approximations, assumptions, caveats/limitations

  • Stock and domestic entitlements are not required to be metered in Victoria. There was not sufficient information relating to actual extraction to provide more accurate estimates of extraction for all groundwater licences. The reported extraction assumes that the full annual entitlement was actually extracted each year, although it is unlikely that this will be the case for all licences.
  • The Kinglake Groundwater Management Unit is managed by Goulburn–Murray Water. Only 19% of the Kinglake Groundwater Management Unit by surface area is within the Melbourne region.
