Urban water – Yarra Valley Water

Summary of water distribution system

Figure 1 and tables 1–5 summarise the water distribution for Yarra Valley Water for 2009–10. The tables provide a breakdown for values shown in Figure 1. Notes for the values provided in tables 1–5 are available after Table 5.

Figure 1: UrbanSAT – summary of Yarra Valley Water

Figure 1. Urban note – summary of Yarra Valley Water*

*All volumes are in megalitres (ML)

Differences between the urban water distribution system components are attributed to unaccounted water losses, and limitations in the calculations of volumes sourced, treated and supplied for consumption and other uses.

Note 1: Direct comparison of the total volume of water supplied (via the urban water supply system and the recycled water supply system) and the total volume of wastewater generated is not feasible due to data limitations on:

  • volume used for outdoor and irrigation purposes, part of which enters the landscape or the groundwater store, not the wastewater system
  • volume used for industrial purposes that may be exported from the region (e.g. beverage industry)
  • volume of water entering the wastewater system via the use of individually taken water sources (e.g. rainwater tanks)
  • volume of wastewater treated via the privately owned wastewater treatment systems
  • ingress of groundwater and stormwater into the wastewater systems, and exfiltration or overflow from the wastewater systems.

Note 2: Part of the wastewater collected is treated by Melbourne Water.

Note 3: Total water usage (116,846 ML) is estimated as: (1) volume of water supplied via the urban water supply system (excluding nonrevenue water) (116,130 ML) plus (2) volume ofwater supplied via the recycled water supply system (716 ML).

Note 4: (1) Volume of wastewater treated by Yarra Valley Water (8,897 ML); (2) volume of effluent discharge (6,250 ML) + volume of recycled water produced (2,639 ML) = 8,889 ML.The difference between (1) and (2) is likely to be due to differences in metering accuracies and unaccounted losses.

Note 5: Volume of recycled water produced (2,639 ML) = recycled water used on-site in-process (1,923 ML)+ recycled water for supplies (716 ML).

U4 Volume of potable water imported or received from other water authorities within the region

YVW_U4: 132,400 ML

Data source

Yarra Valley Water: database (daily and weekly volumes are recorded in various spreadsheets).

Data provider

Yarra Valley Water.

Method

This item represents the metered volume of bulk water supplied by Melbourne Water. Meters are located around the boundaries of Yarra Valley Water’s area and at Silvan, Greenvale and Yan Yean reservoirs. Meters are read daily. Metered volumes are based on Melbourne Water bulk meters. The line item is calculated as (incoming volumes to Yarra Valley Water) – (outgoing volumes metered at South East Water and City West Water boundaries).

Uncertainty

+/–5%.

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

Nil.

U5 Volume of non-potable water imported or received from other water authorities within the region

YVW_U5: 372 ML

Data source

Yarra Valley Water: customer meter database.

Data provider

Yarra Valley Water.

Method

This item represents the metered volume of unchlorinated water taken directly from Melbourne Water’s Maroondah aqueduct to supply customers who have unchlorinated water service agreements. Meters are located at customer premises and are read quarterly.

Volume of water taken from Maroondah aqueduct to provide customers who have unchlorinated water service agreements for commercial, industrial and municipal uses (U13)

317

Total

372

Uncertainty

+/–5%.

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

The four quarterly billed volumes are assumed to estimate the volume used in the National Water Account 2010’s reporting period (i.e. 01 July 2009 – 30 June 2010).

U9 Volume of potable water supplied for residential use

YVW_U9: 90,959 ML

Data source

Yarra Valley Water: quarterly billing database containing customer metered volumes.

Data provider

Yarra Valley Water.

Method

The item represents the metered volume of potable water supplied for residential use.

Customer usage is calculated as the difference between total water received and estimated nonrevenue water volume, and is then divided into residential and nonresidential components in the same ratio as the customer-billed volumes.

Uncertainty

+/–5%.

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

The two key assumptions are:

  • customer usage in the reporting period is the difference between the total water received and the estimated level of nonrevenue water

and

  • residential and nonresidential usage volumes are in the same proportion as billed and metered volumes.

U10 Volume of potable water supplied for commercial, industrial and municipal use

YVW_U10: 24,799 ML

Data source

Yarra Valley Water: quarterly billing database.

Data provider

Yarra Valley Water.

Method

The item represents the metered volume of potable water supplied for commercial, industrial and municipal use.

Customer usage is calculated as the difference between total water received and estimated nonrevenue water volume, and is then divided into residential and nonresidential components in the same ratio as customer-billed volumes.

Uncertainty

+/–5%.

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

Nil.

U11 Volume of potable water supplied other than for residential, commercial, municipal and industrial uses

YVW_U11: 16,642 ML

Data source

Not applicable.

Data provider

Yarra Valley Water.

Method

This item represents the volume of nonrevenue water. Nonrevenue water is estimated by subtracting customer usage from daily volumes received from the bulk supplier. Customer usage is estimated from billing data by allocating quarterly billed volumes over the days that are covered by the billing period for each customer. Daily estimates of nonrevenue water are then aggregated for the year.

Nonrevenue water is estimated by back-allocating each customer’s billed volumes into the period of use, aggregating the volumes for all customers from 01 July to 30 June, and then determining the difference of the total water received. That is, for each day in the reporting period, an estimate of customer usage is subtracted from the total bulk water received on that day to arrive at the estimated level of nonrevenue water.

Uncertainty

+/–10%.

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

Nil.

U12 Volume of non-potable water supplied for residential use

It is assumed that the metered billed volume each year represents an acceptable estimate of the volume used in that year.

U25 Overflow/exfiltration from wastewater system to stormwater

YVW_U21: 17 ML

Data source

Not applicable.

Data provider

Yarra Valley Water.

Method

This item represents the estimated volume of overflows from Yarra Valley Water emergency relief structures into stormwater.

The volume is estimated by using a mosaic ERS data processor, which calculates spill duration and volume based on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) monitoring data. SCADA is a real-time monitoring system.

Uncertainty

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

Nil.

U27 Ingress of stormwater into wastewater system

YVW_U21: 8,636 ML

Data source

Not applicable.

Data provider

Yarra Valley Water.

Method

This item represents the estimated volume of stormwater that enters the wastewater system.

The volume is calculated as:

  • total wastewater flow (based on weekly invoiced sewerage volumes to Melbourne Water’s Eastern and Western treatment plants plus measured inflows into Yarra Valley Water operated wastewater treatment plants)

    minus
  • the dry weather flow.

Dry weather flow is estimated as the average weekly sewer flow during weeks where less than 5 mm rainfall has occurred (aggregated to a full year).

Uncertainty

+/–20%.

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

The estimate of water entering the sewer system cannot distinguish between flows that result from stormwater and flows that result from groundwater. The estimate provided here represents both.
