Adelaide
17.11 Entitled diversion of allocated surface water to users
Supporting information
The volume reported (1,010 ML) represents the volume of water diverted under surface water licences (watercourse) held in the Barossa Prescribed Water Resources Area (PWRA) during the 2012–13 year. Data were not available for the Little Para River Prescribed Watercourse (PWC). The volume reported includes metered and non-metered diversion data as shown in the following table.
Item | Volume (ML) |
metered diversions | 888 |
estimated stock and domestic surface water diversions | 1 |
estimated diversion of surface water carry-over allocations | 121 |
Total | 1,010 |
Quantification approach
Data source
South Australian Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR): Water Information and Licence Management Administration (WILMA) database; Bureau of Meteorology: calculations of non-metered surface water diversions.
Provided by
DEWNR; Bureau of Meteorology.
Method
Metered extraction data were obtained from the WILMA licensing database.
Non-metered diversions for surface water carry-over allocations were calculated by estimating the percentage of allocated surface water diverted in the Barossa PWRA, then applying this percentage to the volume of surface water carry-over allocations at 1 July 2012, reported at line item '5.1 Surface water allocation remaining'. This calculation is summarised in the following table.
Calculation | Item | Volume (ML) |
metered diversions in the Barossa PWRA | 888 | |
add | estimated stock and domestic diversions |
1 |
Subtotal usage | 889 | |
divided by | 21.1 Surface water allocation announcements (for the Barossa PWRA only) | 2,779 |
equals | percentage of allocated surface water diverted in the Barossa PWRA | 32% |
multiply by | surface water carry-over allocation for Barossa PWRA at 1 July 2012 (reported at line item 5.1 Surface water allocation remaining) | 377 |
equals | estimated diversion of surface water carry-over allocations for the Barossa PWRA | 121 |
Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations
- The assumptions made to calculate non-metered diversions were validated by DEWNR water-licensing staff members.
- Metered diversion data were not available for the Little Para PWC.
