Adelaide
18.11 Entitled extraction of allocated groundwater to users
Supporting information
The volume reported (27,528 ML) represents the volume of groundwater extracted under water licences in the Adelaide region during the 2012–13 year. The table below details the groundwater extractions by management area and measurement type.

1 This volume includes metered extractions of rollover groundwater allocations.
2, 4, 7 Assume 100% of groundwater allocated for stock and domestic purposes was extracted, reported at line item 22.1 Groundwater allocation announcements.
3 Refer to quantification approach for estimated other non-metered extractions in the Barossa PWRA
5, 8 Assume 100% of recharged groundwater credits allocated were extracted, reported at line item 22.1 Groundwater allocation announcements.
6 Assume 66.3% of rollover groundwater allocations at 1 July 2012 was extracted in the McLaren Vale PWA, reported at line item 6.1 Groundwater allocation remaining. Refer to quantification approach for percentage applied.
Quantification approach
Data source
South Australian Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR): Water Information and Licence Management Administration System (WILMA) database; Bureau of Meteorology: calculations of non-metered groundwater extractions.
Provided by
DEWNR; Bureau of Meteorology.
Method
Metered extraction data were obtained from the WILMA licensing database.
Non-metered extractions for recharged water were estimated at 100% extraction of the recharged water credits allocation for the McLaren Valen PWA and Northern Adelaide Plains PWA, reported at line item 22.1 Groundwater allocation announcements.
Non-metered other groundwater extractions in the Barossa PWRA were calculated by estimating the percentage of allocated groundwater extracted, then applying this percentage to the groundwater exceptions as reported in the WILMA database. This calculation is summarised in the following table.
Calculation | Item | Volume (ML) |
metered diversions in the Barossa PWRA | 3,381
add | estimated stock and domestic extractions | 29 |
Subtotal extractions | 3,410
divided by | 22.1 Groundwater allocation announcements (for the Barossa PWRA only) | 7,828 |
equals | percentage usage in the Barossa PWRA | 43.56% |
multiply | groundwater exceptions in the Barossa PWRA | 3,308 |
equals | non-metered—estimated other extractions | 1,441 |
Non-metered extraction of groundwater allocation carryover in the McLaren Vale PWA was calculated by estimating the percentage extraction of allocated groundwater, then applying this percentage to the groundwater allocation carryover reported at line item '6.1 Groundwater allocation remaining' at 1 July 2012. This calculation is summarised in the following table.
Calculation | Item | Volume (ML) |
metered diversions in the McLaren Vale PWA | 4,376
add | estimated stock and domestic extractions | 8 |
add | estimated recharged water credits extraction | 6 |
Subtotal extractions | 4,390
divided by | 22.1 Groundwater allocation announcements (for the McLaren Vale PWA only) | 6,617 |
equals | percentage usage in the McLaren Vale PWA | 66.34% |
multiply | groundwater allocation carry-over for McLaren Vale PWA at 1 July 2012 (reported at line item 6.1 Groundwater allocation remaining) | 1,673 |
equals | non-metered—estimated extraction of groundwater allocation carryover | 1,110 |
Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations
The assumptions made to calculate non-metered extractions were validated by DEWNR. The calculation of non-metered diversions was made by the Bureau.
