Supporting information

The table below shows a breakdown of leakage from the potable water supply system for the Canberra region.

Data source

Australian Capital Territory (ACT): ActewAGL production records and billed data.

New South Wales (NSW): Queanbeyan City Council (QCC) database.

Data provider

ActewAGL and QCC.

Method

ActewAGL method

The ACT real losses were calculated in line with Water Services Association of Australia (WSSA) National Performance Framework. The real losses from the distribution system are calculated as shown in the following table.

Queanbeyan method

The 2009–10 leakage from Queanbeyan potable water supply system was calculated from the estimated leakage from water network (reported as 1.19 ML/d). This is calculated by using the difference between what QCC purchases from ACTEW and what QCC sells to their customers.

Uncertainty

The uncertainty for the ActewAGL method is ungraded.

The uncertainty for the Queanbeyan method is +/–50%.

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

ActewAGL

  • Losses from the water distribution system store cannot be distinguished between leakage to groundwater and leakage to landscape, and therefore a combined estimate is provided.
  • Background losses from the potable water supply system include losses from ongoing leakage, pipe bursts and other components. The background leakage from the Canberra potable water supply system in 2009–10 consists of Canberra (ActewAGL) and NSW (QCC) losses.

Queanbeyan

  • Losses from the water distribution store cannot be distinguished between leakage to groundwater and leakage to landscape, and therefore a combined estimate is provided.
