Explanation of how specific volumes have been derived in the above table:

  • The Ovens region volume (1,906 ML) has been derived by adjusting the water audit monitoring (WAM) volume for the Ovens (5,442 ML) by deducting the regulated urban diversions (3,536 ML).
  • The Goulburn–Broken volume (3,677 ML) has been derived by adjusting the WAM volume for the total Goulburn urban diversions (35,939 ML) by deducting the regulated Goulburn urban diversions (32,263 ML).
  • The Loddon volume (1,387 ML) has been derived by adjusting the WAM volume for Loddon (1,721 ML) by deducting the regulated urban diversions (334 ML).
  • The Campaspe volume (141 ML) has been derived by adjusting the WAM volume for Campaspe (203) ML) by deducting the regulated urban diversions (62 ML).
  • Victorian data for the Goulburn–Broken region includes 1,068 ML that was transferred from the Wallaby and Silver creeks to Melbourne.

In New South Wales, no separate information was available in the unregulated system for irrigation, stock and domestic, urban or any other class or purpose, and therefore all unregulated diversions are shown under Line item 14.6.5.6 Diversion of unregulated flows – other lumped holder.

Approximations, assumptions, caveats/limitations

  • Estimates of uncertainty of the diversions are indicative accuracy of bulk diversions at the abstraction point on the river only.
  • Uncertainty reported for diversion at the abstraction point account for possible errors in the data collection process.
  • Uncertainty of diversion at the diversion point: a single metered abstraction point may provide water to a range of users under various types of entitlements (e.g. stock and domestic class). When this happens, the jurisdiction may split the metered abstraction into several classes of entitlements or types of users, according to priority rules governing the entitlements. This split has an inherent uncertainty that is not considered here.
