– = no data available

The above table provides information about New South Wales. Information about groundwater basic rights in other states include:

  • no groundwater management units from the Australian Capital Territory are being reported in this account
  • in addition to licensed groundwater entitlements in Victoria, there is a private statutory right to groundwater for domestic and stock purposes. This is associated with an approval to construct a bore and there is no formal volumes assigned to these rights.
  • no information available to be reported from Queensland and South Australia.

Quantification approach

Data source

New South Wales water sharing plans. See breakdown table in Line item R2.1.2 Groundwater basic right – other lumped basic right available in the note ‘Water rights, entitlements, allocations and trade’.

Data provider

Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA).

Method

Extraction/calculations from jurisdictional groundwater management plans.

Uncertainty

Uncertainty is ungraded.

Approximations, assumptions, caveats/limitations

MDBA assumed that the volume of groundwater extracted under basic rights is the same as the water requirements estimated at the commencements of the water management plans (see breakdown table in Line item R2.1.2 Groundwater basic right – other lumped basic right available in the note ‘Water rights, entitlements, allocations and trade’.

The volume reported for groundwater extracted under basic landowner rights is underestimated, as MDBA only had data for the New South Wales water sharing plans.
