Interpretation of inputs for net change in water storage shown in the above table is provided below:

  • change in net water asset is the difference between closing and opening net water assets for 2009–10
  • Line item 7.1 Interbasin claim on water – remaining (211,000 ML) is the net change of the claim on Snowy Hydro for the required annual release (RAR) for 2009–10
  • Line item 7.6 Non-physical surface water asset – other lumped (–320 ML) represents the net change in advance diversion of surface water allocation in New South Wales regions of Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) for 2009–10
  • Line item 8.1.1.1 Allocation on regulated flows remaining – stock and domestic (S&D) water access entitlement (WAE) (–270 ML) represents the net change in the liability associated with the allocation on regulated flows from S&D WAE in Border Rivers New South Wales region of MDB for 2009–10
  • Line item 8.1.2.4 Allocation on regulated flows remaining – high-security, urban holder (2 ML) represents the net change in the liability associated with the allocation on respective entitlement category in Murray New South Wales region of the MDB for 2009–10
  • Line 8.1.2.7 Allocation on regulated flows remaining – high-security, other lumped holders (–796 ML) represents the net change in the liability associated with the allocation on respective entitlement category in Lower Darling (New South Wales) and Murray (New South Wales) regions of MDB for 2009–10
  • Line 8.1.3.6 Allocation on regulated flows remaining – general and low-security, other lumped holders (475,979 ML) represents the net change in the liability associated with the allocation on respective entitlement category in New South Wales regions of MDB for 2009–10
  • Line 8.1.9.1 Allocation on regulated flows remaining – bulk irrigator holder (46,144 ML) represents the net change in the liability associated with the allocation on respective entitlement category in Murrumbidgee New South Wales and Murray New South Wales regions of MDB for 2009–10
  • Line 8.1.9.7 Allocation on regulated flows remaining – other lumped holders (731,511 ML) represents the net change in the liability associated with the allocation on respective entitlement category in Goulburn–Broken (Victoria), Loddon (Victoria), Campaspe (Victoria), Murrumbidgee (New South Wales) and Murray (South Australia and Victoria) regions of MDB for 2009–10.

Interpretation of inputs for total water assets on 30 June 2010 shown in the above table is provided below:

  • Line item 1.1 Storages – entitlement system (7,346,102 ML) is the volume of water held in storage reservoirs on 30 June 2010
  • Line item 1.3 Regulated channel (970,657 ML) is the volume of water held in regulated channels and weirs, other ponds and reservoirs in the MDB region that are not used to provide water to the regulated entitlement system for which volumes were estimated on 30 June 2010
  • Line item 1.4 Lakes and wetlands – connected (1,130,947 ML) is the volume of water held in lakes and wetlands that are connected to the river channel system for which volumes were estimated on 30 June 2010
  • Line item 1.5 Connected surface water – other lumped (13,574 ML) is the volume of water held in storages that are used for other purposes than supplying water for licensed entitlements in regulated systems for which volumes were estimated on 30 June 2010
  • Line item 2.3 Aquifers – other lumped (1,019,004 ML) is the total groundwater asset of 27 groundwater management units within MDB for which volumes were estimated on 30 June 2010
  • The volume of water within the water distribution system store within the MDB region was not able to be quantified with representational faithfulness (WASB 2009, p. 4). Therefore, the volume is not shown and not accounted in the above table
  • Line item 7.1 Interbasin claim on water – remaining (409,000 ML) is the claim on Snowy Hydro for the RAR as estimated on 30 June 2010
  • Line item 7.6 Non-physical surface water asset – other lumped (453 ML) is the claim on advance diversion of surface water allocation in New South Wales regions of MDB as estimated on 30 June 2010
  • of the total water assets that could be quantified, there was 10,889,737 ML available in the MDB region at 30 June 2010, up 3,815,583 ML from 30 June 2009.
