20.2 Leakages from water distribution system

Supporting information

The table below contains a  breakdown of the volume of leakage from the water supply system for each water resource  plan (WRP) area in the South East Queensland (SEQ) region.

Volume of background leakage from water supply system
Water Resource Plan (WRP) area Background leakage     volume (ML)
Gold Coast 4,387
Logan Basin 5,118
Moreton 16,986
Total SEQ region 26,491

Quantification approach

Data source

Queensland Water Commission (QWC) WaterHub  Database.

Data provider

QWC.

Method

Council leakage volumes were  calculated by taking the difference between the water diverted and the water  consumed in the SEQ region. WRP area leakage volumes were then derived by  taking a weighted average of the council leakage volumes, based on the  proportion of water consumed in each council located within the WRP area. Total  leakage for the SEQ region was then calculated by summing the Moreton, Logan  Basin and Gold Coast WRP area estimates.

Uncertainty

Derived from measured data.  Estimated in the range +/– 30%.

Approximations, assumptions, caveats and  limitations

  • The Method used for deducing the leakage was  limited as the amount of water consumed but not billed for was unknown. The  volume of water consumed was taken from the retailer billing data; therefore,  only water that was billed for was included in this volume.
  • Leakage estimates from supplies not connected to  the grid could not be quantified.
  • Leakage from the water distribution store cannot  be distinguished from leakage to groundwater and leakage to landscape. Therefore,  a combined estimate was quantified.
