Murray-Darling Basin
17.2 River outflow from the region

Supporting Information

The volumetric value for the line item for the whole region for the 2010–11 year was 12,849,073 ML. This was the river outflow from SA Murray sustainable diversion limit (SDL) area to the sea estimated at the barrages.

The same volume applies as the river outflow from the Southern Basin. The river outflows from the Northern Basin into the Southern Basin were 1,840,333 ML. This was the inflow from the Barwon–Darling watercourse SDL area into the Lower Darling SDL area calculated at the upstream end of Menindee Lakes.

Quantification Approach

Data Source

Water Audit Monitoring data received from New South Wales (2 February 2011) and South Australia (07 February 2012), and stored in the Murray–Darling Basin Authority HYDRO database.

Provided by

Murray–Darling Basin Authority.

Method

Flows into Menindee Lakes from the Barwon-Darling watercourse were based on metered discharge data and subsequent calculations.

Flows through the barrages were estimated based on the number of barrages open, the duration of their opening and the flow rates across the barrages.

Assumptions, Limitations, Caveats and Approximations

Nil.

Uncertainty Information

The uncertainty estimate was not quantified.

Comparative year

The value reported as comparative year corresponds to the line item 14.2 Surface water flow out of region, which was reported in the 2010 Account. The volume reported in the 2010 Account for the 2009–10 year for the whole Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) region was 0 ML. Outflow from the Northern Basin to the Southern Basin during the 2009–10 year was 2,431,343 ML. In the 2010 Account, no information was provided for flow between segments because the MDB region was reported as a single region on which segments were not defined.
