Murray-Darling Basin
9.11 Delivery of water under inter-region agreement

Supporting Information

The line item applies only to the Southern Basin of the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) region. The volumetric value for the line item for the 2010–11 year was 2,310,491 ML. The line item comprises water received in the MDB region from Glenelg River water transfers and Snowy Hydro releases. The following table provides a breakdown of the volume.

Further information on claim for Glenelg River water transfer

Under a Victorian bulk entitlement, Grampians Wimmera–Mallee Water is able to transfer water to the Wimmera–Mallee supply system (within the MDB region) from:

  • the Glenelg River upstream of and including Rocklands Reservoir
  • the first and second Wannon Creeks upstream of and including the weirs.

The volume transferred during the 2010–11 year was 308 ML.

Further information on claim for Snowy Hydro releases

Snowy Hydro Ltd delivers water from the Snowy Mountains Scheme (outside of the MDB region based on its definition) to the Tumut River and River Murray, under the terms of the Snowy Water Licence. This value is included as a transfer. The total volume delivered by Snowy Hydro to the Tumut River and River Murray during the 2010–11 year is 2,310,183 ML.

Line item 1.5 Inter-region claim on water explains in more detail the arrangements for the calculation of the required annual release (RAR).

A water transfer not recognised in the water accounting statements

Toowoomba regional council has entitlements within the Moreton Water Resource Plan area that is within the South East Queensland region. Toowoomba regional council receives water from Perseverance, Cressbrook and Wivenhoe storages (through Cressbrook Reservoir) for urban purposes within the MDB region. This water supplements the Toowoomba regional council's diversions within the MDB region. This transfer arrangement delivers water directly into the Toowoomba regional council's distribution network, which is excluded from the MDB region. The transferred volume, 2,396 ML, for the 2010–11 year from Cressbrook and Perseverance storages is therefore not reported in the water accounting statements for the MDB region.

Quantification Approach

Data Source

(1) Snowy Hydro transfers: Snowy Hydro Limited Water Operations Report 2010–11, and (2) Water Audit Monitoring data received from Victoria (31 January 2012) and stored in the Murray–Darling Basin Authority HYDRO database.

Provided by

Murray–Darling Basin Authority.

Water audit monitoring data were derived from measured data.

Other data were measured or extracted from reports by Snowy Hydro Ltd.

Comparative year

The value reported as comparative year corresponds to the 13.6.3 Delivery of water transferred in under inter-basin agreement to connected surface water that was reported in the 2010 Account.
