South East Queensland
17.7 Entitled diversion of non-allocated surface water to users

Supporting information

The volumetric value for the line item at the end of the 2012–13 year was 9,035 ML.

This line item includes:

  • water licence diversions for stock and domestic use
  • unsupplemented surface water licence/allocation diversions
  • riparian entitlement diversions within water supply schemes (WSSs).

The stock and domestic, riparian entitlement, and unsupplemented surface water licence/allocation diversions in the South East Queensland (SEQ) region can be seen in the following table.

Riparian entitlement diversions were for Warrill Valley, Lower Lockyer, and Logan River. The riparian allowance figure does not include either Mary or mid Brisbane (unknown).

Quantification approach

Data source

Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM): data on stock and domestic use (from the Water Management System database); Seqwater: data on reparian entitlements and unsupplemented surface water licence/allocation diversions.

Provided by

DNRM; Seqwater.

Method

An estimate has been made of the water licences for stock and domestic use of water within the SEQ region. The total number of properties with water licences for stock and domestic use was multiplied by an assumed diversion rate of 2 ML per property to obtain an estimate of the volume abstracted.

Riparian entitlement diversions were obtained from Seqwater.

Assumptions, limitations, caveats and approximations

The assumed diversion rate of 2 ML per property may not be appropriate for all users and adds uncertainty to the estimated value.

Uncertainty information

Derived from estimated data. The uncertainty estimate was not quantified.

Comparative year

An error was made calculating the 2011-12 year volume published in the 2012 Account due to  exclusion of unsupplemented surface water licence/allocation diversions, and also in the estimate of number of stock and domestic licences plus riparian entitlement diversions. Consequently, the volume has been restated from 2049 ML (as published in the 2012 Account) to 9,035 ML.
