Metadata for map layers

Overview

The map layers are presented to aid the user in finding the relevant data. They are not meant to be comprehensive topographic layers, particularly at large scales, where gaps in road and drainage networks may be evident.

The layers have been primarily chosen for speed and best representation of features at different zoom levels. Also, the mapping has been done at different scales, so discrepancies between layers may exist.

Base layers

Plain

The country boundaries are from two sources. At scales greater than 1:10 000 000, the outlines are from the ESRI Data and Maps 9.3 dataset of Countries 2008: http://www.esri.com/data/data-maps/. At larger scales, the boundaries are from Vector Map Level 0 (VMap0) from the National Geospatial Intelligenc Agency (NGA): http://earth-info.nga.mil/publications/vmap0.html.

Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)

The EEZ dataset is sourced from the VLIZ Maritime Boundaries Geodatabase. Citation. VLIZ (2010). Maritime Boundaries Geodatabase, version v4 is available online at http://www.vliz.be/vmdcdata/marbound/.

Elevation

The elevation is part of the General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean 30 arc-seconds (GEBCO_08 Grid, version 20090202, http://www.gebco.net). The land data are based on USGS SRTM30 gridded digital elevation product supplemented with data from USGS GTOPO30 datast and ICESat laser altimetry digital elevation model. The gridded data has been classified into ranges and converted to polygons.

Elevation and bathymetry

The bathymetry data are also sourced from GEBCO_08 Grid, version 20090202, http://www.gebco.net. The gridded data has been classified into ranges and converted to polygons. To display a consistent coastline, a mask was applied.

Overlays

Places

The places are primarily from the ESRI Data and Maps 9.3 dataset of cities (http://www.esri.com/data/data-maps/) with some additional locations from Vector Map Level 0 (VMap0) from the National Geospatial Intelligenc Agency (NGA): http://earth-info.nga.mil/publications/vmap0.html.

Roads

The roads layer is from the Vector Map Level 0 (VMap0) from the National Geospatial Intelligenc Agency (NGA): http://earth-info.nga.mil/publications/vmap0.html. Only primary routes are shown at scales greater than 1:6 000 000.

Lakes and Rivers

The rivers and lakes layers are sourced from the Vector Map Level 0 (VMap0) from the National Geospatial Intelligenc Agency (NGA): http://earth-info.nga.mil/publications/vmap0.html. At a scale of 1:8 000 000 or greater, permanent and named rivers are shown. Between 1: 3 000 000 and 1: 8 000 000, all permament rivers are displayed. Only perennial lakes are shown at scales of 1: 6 000 000 or greater.
