Rainfall
Following a drier than average June; NSW experienced above average rainfall in July, particularly in the northern half of the state. The statewide average rainfall for July was 59.4 mm which is above the historical average1of 39.4 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded a basin-wide average of 54.5 mm which is above the historical average of 39.7 mm. This was the first month since March with above average rainfall for NSW and the Murray Darling Basin (MDB), and the wettest July since 1998 for NSW (96.5 mm) and the MDB (90.8 mm).
Slow moving high pressure systems were the dominant synoptic feature during July, resulting in mostly fine conditions across NSW. Moist onshore flow generated by these systems brought isolated showers to coastal regions during the month; however, much of the rainfall experienced by inland regions during July resulted from upper and surface level troughs that moved across the state during the month.
On the 2nd an upper level trough brought rainfall to most inland districts, whilst on the 6th another upper level trough, preceded by a cloud band, brought rainfall to much of eastern NSW. From the 11th to the 12th, a cold front moving throught the southeast of the state brought showers and rainfall to southern border regions, with northeastern NSW also experiencing rainfall as this system moved across the state. From the 13th to the 15th, a strong front moved across NSW, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall across most districts, particularly west of the ranges. On the 20th, southerly winds generated by the interaction of a high pressure ridge over NSW and low pressure system over the Tasman, brought rainfall to some coastal districts. During the 28th - 31st July the interaction of moist northeasterly winds with a series of upper level troughs brought significant rainfall to most districts.
Some sites had their highest total July rainfall on record.See a map of rainfall deciles.
Temperature
NSW experienced above average temperatures during July, with a statewide average mean temperature of 9.9 °C which is 0.5 °C above the historical average of 9.4 °C.
Maximum temperature
July maximum temperatures were average to above average across NSW; with the exception of parts of the far west, where they were average to below average. The overall statewide average maximum temperature for NSW during July was 15.6 °C which is 0.3 °C above the historical average of 15.3 °C. This is the 12th consecutive July with above average maximum temperatures in NSW.
Very cold air over NSW in the first few days of July saw daytime temperatures drop significantly in northern parts of the state. On the 2nd, Casino AP recorded its lowest daily maximum temperature of just 12.9 °C.
Some sites had their coldest July day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.
Minimum temperature
The northeastern half of NSW experienced above to very much above average minimum temperatures during July. This was largely a result of two main events during the month. Enhanced cloud cover associated with the passage of a front, resulted in warm overnight temperatures across northern and central parts of the state from the 11th to 13th, and throughout coastal regions on the 14th. From the 29th to the 31st moist northeasterly winds combined with enhanced cloud cover (associated with the passage of two upper level troughs), resulted in very warm minimum temperatures over much of inland NSW. Highest daily minimum temperature records were broken in parts of the northeast on the 31st (see table).
In contrast, the far southwest experienced average to below average minimum temperatures during July. This resulted in an overall statewide average minimum temperature of 4.2 °C which is 0.7 °C above the historical average of 3.5 °C.
Some sites had their lowest July temperature on record. Some sites had their warmest July night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.
Some sites had their highest July mean daily minimum temperature on record.
See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 2 August 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
