New South Wales in October 2010: Wettest October in 34 years

Rainfall
NSW experienced above average rainfall in October, under the influence of the moderate to strong La Niña event which is now well established in the Pacific Ocean. This is the 4th consecutive month with above average rainfall for NSW - a response consistent with patterns expected during a La Niña event. Long-range models surveyed by the Bureau of Meteorology suggest that this La Niña event will continue into at least early 2011. The statewide average rainfall for October was 84.7 mm which is above the historical average of 44.4 mm. This is the wettest month for NSW since February 2010, when 117.9 mm was recorded. It is also the wettest October since 1976 (85.3 mm) and the 6th wettest October on record (current record is 99.8 mm in October 1950).
There were several significant rainfall events during the month. From the 3rd - 5th, a low pressure system over the northern NSW coast (near Yamba) brought very heavy rainfall to north-eastern districts, with minor to moderate flooding on the north and mid-north coasts. A low-pressure trough brought more rainfall to these districts from the 9th - 12th. During the 13th - 16th, significant rainfall was recorded across the state due to the interaction of a strong cold front with a cloud band. This event brought torrential rainfall and widespread flooding to the Riverina and South West Slopes districts. Some Riverina Shires were declared a Natural Disaster by the NSW State Government on the 16th. Widespread rainfall was again experienced across the state from the 24th to the 25th, associated with the passage of a cold front.
Similarly, the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) experienced above average rainfall during October, with a basin-wide average of 72.4 mm which is above the historical average of 40.1 mm. This is the 9th wettest October on record for the MDB (current record 93.2 mm in October 1949). It is also the 4th consecutive month with above-average rainfall for the MDB, and the wettest October since 1975, when 82.2 mm of rainfall was recorded.

Temperature
Daytime temperatures during October were below average across much of NSW, particularly in the northeast, where some locations recorded their lowest mean daytime temperature for October on record. The statewide average maximum temperature was 23.4°C which is 1.0°C below the historical average of 24.4°C, and the coolest October since 2003 for average maximum temperatures. The cooler than average daytime temperatures experienced across NSW in October is a pattern typically expected during a La Niña event.
Night-time temperatures were average in the west and above average in the east during October. The overall statewide average minimum temperature was 10.8°C which is 0.3°C above the historical average of 10.5°C.
The statewide average mean temperature was 17.1°C which is 0.4°C below the historical average of 17.5°C.
Some sites had their coldest October day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Other phenomena
On the 16th, snow was reported in the Central Tablelands (Oberon, Katoomba,Orange and Bathurst) and Southern Tablelands (Charlotte Pass, Goulburn, Taralga and Thredbo), associated with the passage of a strong cold front.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 1 November 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
