Sydney in November 2010: Wet end to spring

  • Wettest November in 3 years
  • Cool days
  • Warm nights

The Bureau of Meteorology’s 2010 annual climate summary for Sydney will be published on this web site on Wednesday 5 January, as will a comprehensive summary for all of Australia.

Rainfall

Sydney experienced a wet end to spring, recording 129.6 mm of rainfall during November, which is above the historical average of 83.1 mm. This was the wettest November since 2007 when 170.0 mm of rainfall was recorded, and significantly wetter than the November 2009 total of 13.2 mm.

Rainfall was recorded every day for the first 7 days of the month, totalling 81.6 mm. Sydney has not experienced 7 consecutive days of rain in the first week of November since 1937, when rainfall totalled 76.1 mm over the first week. A total of 14 raindays were recorded during the month (average 12), with the most significant falls on the 1st/2nd, associated with the passage of a low pressure trough; on the 5th/6th, associated with moist onshore flow from a high pressure system in the Bight; and from the 15th to the 17th, also associated with the passage of a low pressure trough. During the last few days of the month, a low pressure trough/upper level trough brought 11.4 mm of rainfall to Sydney. The interaction of these two systems also resulted in significant rainfall across much of NSW.

Sydney's water storage is currently at 59.3% of capacity. This is an increase of 1.2% from October levels, and 3.8% higher than November 2009. Current water storage information can be found on the new Bureau of Meteorology Water Storage web site.

Some sites had their lowest total November rainfall on record.

Temperature

The average maximum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 23.5°C which is below the historical average of 24.0°C and the coolest November since 2007 (23.5°C). This is also significantly lower than the November 2009 average of 26.1°C. Two days recorded a maximum temperature above 30 °C (13th and 14th) which is average for November, yet lower than the November 2009 total of 6 days over 30 °C.

Minimum temperatures averaged 16.9°C, which is above the historical average of 15.3°C, yet significantly cooler than the November 2009 mean of 18.7°C. There were 12 nights above 18°C, more than double the historical average of 5 nights. However, in comparison, Sydney experienced 21 nights above 18°C during November 2009.

Wind

Coastal Sydney experienced prevailing east to north-easterly winds during November, with a frequency of 56% from this direction at 3pm, which is average for this time of year. The highest wind gust at Sydney Airport was 76 km/hr from the west-southwest on the 8th.

Other phenomena

Sydney Airport recorded 2 thunderstorms during the month, on the 9th and 10th (historical average 4 storms). Sunshine averaged 7.0 hours per day at Sydney Airport (average 7.6 hours).

Daily rainfall

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with »» are part of a longer accumulation, which is marked like this on the final day. Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. Days marked with - have a rainfall report of zero; days left blank have no rainfall report (which often indicates no rain fell).
This table is very wide; you may have to scroll sideways to see all the days, and you may need to set the paper to 'landscape' to print.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Sydney - Greater Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Wednesday 1 December 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
