NSW in January 2011: 2011 begins with warm days and warmer nights

  • 7th consecutive month with above average rainfall.
  • Wettest January since 1996.
  • Above average maximum and minimum temperatures.
  • 11th consecutive warm year.

Rainfall

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 80.37mm during January 2011, above the historical average of 67.3mm. This is the wettest January since 100.7mm fell in 1996 and the 7th consecutive month with above average rainfall, a consequence of the continuing La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean. Rainfall was highest in the west of the state, with large areas experiencing more than 4 times their January average and eleven stations recording their wettest January on record. Additionally, Euston, Cockburn and Tenterfield recording their highest monthly total for any month. In contrast, large areas in eastern NSW recorded well below average rainfall.

The majority of the rain fell during a major event in western NSW as a trough passed between the 11th and 14th, bringing record-breaking daily totals to several stations, often more than double the previous January record. This system brought substantial rain extending into Victoria, resulting in some riverine flooding in NSW and extensive flooding south of the border. Significant rainfall also occurred in the northeast corner on the 6th and 7th, associated with some flooding along the Far North Coast.

The Murray Darling Basin also recorded above average rainfall, with 72.62mm compared to the historical average of 56.3mm, the wettest January since 1996.

Some sites had their highest total January rainfall on record. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

January 2011 was a warm start to the year in NSW with statewide average maximum temperatures of 32.8 °C, which is 1.1 °C above the historical average of 31.7 °C. Temperatures were warmer than average across most of the state, with particularly warm temperatures in central regions and part of the central coast, with temperatures more than 2 °C above average. Temperatures were warmest later in the month, particularly on the 26th and 27th, with large areas of NSW recording temperatures 8 °C or more above the January average and record January maximums at Scone and Quirindi. However, temperatures were cooler in early January, with record lows at Montague Island on the 3rd.

Minimum temperatures were also well above average during January at 19.2 °C, 1.5 °C above the historical average of 17.7 °C. Temperatures were particularly warm in the southern part of the state, with large areas 2 °C above average including records at several southeastern stations including Sydney Airport. Norfolk Island also recorded its warmest January nights on record, as a consequence of continuing warm sea surface temperatures. Mean temperatures were consequently 1.3 °C above average in January, the 11th consecutive warm year.

Some sites had their highest January temperature on record. Some sites had their coldest January day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their highest January mean daily minimum temperature on record. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Other phenomena

Heavy rain on the far north coast over the end of December and early January led to severe flooding in southeast Queensland, with floodwaters moving down rivers to affect northern NSW as far south as Grafton, with hundreds of people evacuated and thousands isolated during the first two weeks of January, as well as over fifty flood rescues. The slow progression of water through the Murray and Darling rivers is expected to further impact inland NSW over February.

Heavy rainfall in western NSW and Victoria during the 12th-14th of January led to slow riverine flooding in western parts of NSW, with the SES receiving approximately 250 requests for assistance.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 February 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
