Rainfall
NSW recorded 85mm of rain during February 2011, above the historical average of 50.6mm. This was the 8th consecutive month with above average rainfall in NSW, a consequence of a strong La Niña event persisting in the Pacific Ocean. Rainfall was highest in the west and south of the state with large areas experiencing over four times their February average, particularly during the first week of the month, and record rainfall at 32 stations. In addition, the Murray Darling Basin recorded its 11th wettest February on record, with 81.1mm compared to the historical average of 40.4mm. In comparison, generally dry conditions were experienced in the north and east of the state, with record dry conditions at Chatswood in Sydney.
The majority of the rainfall occurred between the 2nd and 6th of the month, as the remains of tropical cyclone Anthony tracked over western NSW. This brought very high humidity to the state and significant rainfall in southern and western regions, reaching 173mm at Paringi on the 5th. Several western stations experienced record daily rainfall between the 5th and 6th, with Rand PO, Howlong PO, Euston, Oxley and Wentworth recording their wettest day for any month.
Several other wet days occurred during the month, with daily falls above 100mm also being recorded on the 11th and 12th in the southeast, notable at Argalong, amidst mosit onshore windflow; the 15th in the northwest associated with a low pressure trough, with further falls on the 16th and 17th; on the 20th in the Snowy Mountains; and on the 21st in the Hunter Valley associated with thunderstorm activity.
Some sites had their highest total February rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total February rainfall on record. See a map of rainfall deciles.Temperature
The statewide average temperature for NSW was above average in February at 30.2 °C, 0.7 °C above the historical average of 24.5 °C. This was due to below average maximums but above average minimums during the month, with warmest conditions in the northeast.
Maximum temperatures during February averaged just 0.1 °C above the historical average of 31.4 °C, with anomalies ranging from -3 °C along the southern border to +2 °C on the central coast, with the coolest conditions associated with areas of high rainfall and warmer temperatures where drier conditions prevailed. Conditions in the east were warmest in the first week of the month, as a sustained heatwave impacted the Metropolitan and Hunter regions with seven consecutive warm days, with record breaking temperatures on the 1st and the 5th. A cool change on the 6th brought cooler conditions across the state, including record cold at Broken Hill.
Minimum temperatures were well above average during February at 18.9 °C , 1.3 °C above the historical average of 17.6 °C. This was the 11th warmest February on record for minimum temperatures. Minimums were also warmest in the north and east of the state, particularly during the first week of the month, although closer to average conditions were experienced in the west. During the extended heatwave from January 31st to February 6th, twenty stations recorded their warmest night on record including Sydney Observatory Hill, with Bankstown and Newcastle experiencing record temperatures on multiple occasions during the week. Several records for extended periods of warm nights were also broken during this week, including five consecutive nights above 24 °C at Observatory Hill.
For more information on this exceptionally warm event see our Special Climate Statement 27 issued on February 8 2011.
Some sites had their highest February temperature on record. Some sites had their coldest February day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their highest February mean daily maximum temperature on record. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.
Some sites had their warmest February night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.
Other phenomena
Several strong wind days were experienced during the month, particularly in the Snowy Mountains, with gusts of over 90km/hr recorded at Thredbo on the 1st, 4th and 5th, reaching 130km/hr on the 19th.
Further floods occurred in NSW during February due to a combination of continued riverine flooding due to January rain events, as well as substantial flooding in southwestern regions associated with the heavy rain in the first week of February. Seven additional regionds were declared Natural Disaster Zones during this month.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 1 March 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
