NSW in March 2011: Coldest March since 1994

Rainfall

NSW recorded a total rainfall of 64.8 mm during March 2011, above the historical average of 38.6mm, although lower than the 81.3mm recorded during March 2010. This is the 9th consecutive month with above average rainfall in NSW, only the second time on record with nine consecutive wet months, the previous instance occurring between May 1916 and February 1917. In addition, the Murray Darling Basin recorded 65.1 mm during March, above the historical average of 38.6mm although also drier than March 2010 (81.3mm).

The majority of the rainfall fell in western and central NSW, which has now had three consecutive near record-breaking months and the wettest start to a year on record, including 398mm between January and March at Broken Hill, significantly above the previous record of 323mm. Some significant rain also fell on the southern and central coast during the month, with falls of up to 178mm in the Sydney Metropolitan region on the 20th and 21st. Orographic enhancement of the same low pressure system which caused the heavy rainfall in Sydney led to very high falls in the Illawarra and South Coast districts on the 22nd, up to 398mm at Mt Darragh, the highest daily falls since the 1980s. Candelo and Bombala also recorded their highest March daily falls in more than 100 years of record during this event. Drier conditions were experienced in the northeast of the state, following the drying observed in these regions during the first months of the year.

Temperature

Maximum temperatures were 0.9 °C below average during March at 27.7 °C, the 9th coldest March on record and the coldest March since 1994, associated with the high rainfall and cloudiness during the month. Almost all of the state experienced below average temperatures during the month, particularly in the west of the state where maximums were as much as 3 °C below average, including the coldest March on record at Broken Hill and Menindee. However, warmer than average conditions persisted along the coast associated with warm sea surface temperatures and lower rainfall, particularly in the northeast of the state. Temperatures were generally cool throughout the month, although very warm conditions were experienced in the northeast on the 1st, with record breaking daily maximums reaching 41.4 °C at Walgett.

Minimum temperatures averaged 15.9°C during March, 0.7 °C above the historical average of 15.2 °C, with mean temperatures consequently 0.1 °C below average during March. Minimum temperatures were within 1 °C of average across most of the state, with warmest conditions along the coast and in the northeast of the state. The warm sea surface temperatures caused particularly warm conditions at the offshore islands, with both Lord Howe and Norfolk Island experiencing their warmest March day and night on record during the month. Lord Howe also recorded its warmest March on record for average minimum temperatures.

Other phenomena

Very severe rainfall associated with a low pressure trough caused flash flooding in the Sydney Metropolitan region on the 20th and widespread flooding in the Illawarra and South Coast regions on the 22nd. Key roads and train lines were closed, with major flooding of the Bega river and over 500 calls for assistance to the SES including 43 flood rescues.

The strongest winds occurred on the 1st of the month associated with several thunderstorms, reaching 106km/hr at Walgett in the north and 100km/hr at Green Cape in the south, with winds exceeding 90km/hr at numerous locations across the state including Newcastle, Armidale and Coffs Harbour. In Williamtown, several trees were downed with damage to some houses.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 April 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
