Rainfall
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 33.2 mm during May, below the historical average of 47.1 mm but significantly wetter than May 2008 (12 mm). The drying conditions follow slightly below average rainfall during April associated with the declining influence of La Niña on Australian climate, with most of the state recording close to median rainfall during the month. The Murray Darling Basin also recorded below average rainfall during May, averaging 27.7 mm compared to the historical average of 42.3 mm.
Rainfall was highest along the coast, with the majority of rain falling in two main events. The first occurred as a cold front moved eastward into the state on the 22nd, bringing the only significant totals in inland NSW over the 23rd and 24th. Daily rainfall reached 46.2 mm at Parkes on the 23rd with large areas exceeding 25 mm, while up to 54 mm was recorded at Thredbo and in the Snowy Mountains on the 24th. As the cold front moved offshore, an East Coast Low developed in its wake, bringing daily totals of up to 143.8 mm at Newcastle on the 25th.
The second rainfall event occurred towards the end of the month, as a low pressure trough developed off the coast with an associated upper low. This brought significant rainfall to coastal regions, particularly on the 31st as daily totals exceeded 50 mm through much of the Hunter and Mid North Coast regions, reaching 122 mm at Katoomba (Murri St) and 114.2 mm at Gosford.

May temperatures in NSW averaged 12.0 °C, well below the historical average of 13.4 °C. This was associated with cool daytime temperatures and very cold night time temperatures, particularly in inland regions. This was the 6th coldest May on record for mean temperatures, and the coldest since 2006.
Maximum temperatures averaged 18.7 °C during May, 0.6 °C below the historical average of 19.3 °C. These were the coldest daytime temperatures in May since 2000, and the 12th coldest on record. Almost all of NSW had below average temperatures during May, particularly in the west of the state. Temperatures were particularly cold in coastal regions on the 30th during a heavy rainfall event, with record-breaking daily maximums at several coastal stations including Coffs Harbour.
Minimum temperatures were also well below average during May at 5.5 °C, 2 °C below the historical average of 7.5 °C. This was the 4th coldest May on record for minimums, and the coolest since 2006. Most of the state had temperatures more than 1 °C below average, with large areas recording minimums up to 3 °C below average, particularly in the Southern Tablelands. In comparison, minimum temperatures were well above average on the offshore islands, associated with warm sea surface temperatures, with both Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands recording average night time temperatures more than 2 °C warmer than the warmest mainland site at Byron Bay.
The cool temperatures during May were particularly linked to a very cold week between the 10th and 18th, as a high pressure system drove persistent southwesterly winds into the state, driving minimums as much as 10 °C below average between the 15th and 18th. Temperatures were particularly cold in the Snowy Mountains on the 10th, with up to 15cm of snow reported by major ski resorts.

Other phenomena
Strong winds were reported in the Metropolitan and Hunter regions associated with the East Coast Low on the 25th, reaching 111km/hr at Wattamolla AWS, resulting in minor damage in these regions.
Waterspouts were spotted off Avoca Beach associated with the rain event on the 30th, in addition to flash flooding in southern suburbs of Sydney.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Wednesday 1 June 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
