NSW in June 2011: ECL brings wet June for the North Coast

Rainfall
NSW recorded a statewide average of 34.1 mm during June, slightly below the historical average of 38.8 mm. The month was generally dry, particularly in western regions, with much of the northwest recording close to 0 mm during the month, in the lowest 10% of years. The MDB also recorded 16.9 mm of rain during June, the driest June since 9.9 mm in 1986 and the 8th driest on record.
The dry conditions were offset by a very wet week on the north coast between the 12th and 16th, as an East Coast Low brought several consecutive days of heavy rain and strong winds. 5-day totals reached 642 mm at Fishermans Reach, with daily totals as high as 250 mm at Woolgoolga on the 14th. This caused the wettest June since at least the 1960s across the region, including record-breaking totals at several stations. The event was also associated with substantial flooding, with six communities evacuated and 16,000 people isolated in the Kempsey and Taree regions.

The NSW average maximum temperature was 16.9 °C during June, 0.8 °C above the historical average, associated with generally clear conditions during the month. Most of the state recorded temperatures up to 1 °C above average, with warmest conditions along the southern border and slightly cooler than average temperatures in the far northeast, associated with the enhanced rainfall in this area. Temperatures were warmest during the first and last weeks of the month associated with clear conditions under high pressure systems, while southerly winds on the 8th and 9th brought record-breaking cold to Goulburn and Murwillumbah.
Minimum temperatures were slightly below average, at 4.3 °C compared to the historical average of 4.6 °C. Temperatures were above average in the east, associated with lingering warm sea surface temperatures, and below average in western regions. The warmest conditions were recorded on the Offshore islands, typical for winter, with average minimums reaching 16 °C at Norfolk Island, but just 12.5 °C at Byron Bay.
Mean temperatures were consequently 10.6 °C, 0.3 °C above the historical average of 10.3 °C.

Other phenomena
An East Coast Low between the 12th and 16th caused heavy rain along the North Coast, resulting in substantial flooding and wind gusts reaching 102 km/hr at Murrurundi Gap. Six communities were evacuated and 16,000 people isolated in the Kempsey and Taree regions, with more than 50 flood rescues performed. Twenty Local Government Areas had Natural Disasters declared as a result of storms and flooding during the month.
Strong winds associated with a cold front on the 21st reached 143 km/hr at Thredbo AWS, causing falling trees and minor damage in south west Sydney and the Illawarra.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 July 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
