Rainfall

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 93.8 mm of rain during June, below the historical average of 130.5 mm. The rain fell over 12 days, average for June, primarily clustered between the 11th and 17th. During this East Coast Low event, Observatory Hill experienced four consecutive days above 10 mm, reaching 23.4 mm on the 13th. Daily falls associated with this event reached 42 mm at Turramurra. The rest of the month was generally dry, associated with prevailing westerly winds. The exception was totals of up to 38.2 mm at Liverpool on the 1st, associated with the trough system and thunderstorm activity that caused heavy falls at the end of May.

Temperature

The average maximum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill during June was 18 °C, 1.1 °C above the historical average of 16.9 °C, associated with predominantly westerly winds during the month. Temperatures were generally within 0.5 °C of average in the Metropolitan region, coolest at Camden in the south west. The warm days were associated with dry conditions at the start and end of the month, with six days exceeding 20 °C during June, twice the historical average.

Minimum temperatures were also 1 °C above average during June, with 10.3 °C at Observatory Hill compared to the historical average of 9.2 °C. Temperatures were above average throughout the region, particularly at Sydney Airport, which had its equal 9th warmest June on record. Minimums were coolest associated with the East Coast Low between the 11th and 17th, and warmer towards the start and end of the month, with only 11 days during the month dropping below 10 °C at Observatory Hill, well below the June average of 20 days. The coldest nights during the month were 7.3 °C on the 15th and 16th, the equal 7th warmest on record.

Wind

Winds were predominantly westerly during June, with 45% of 3pm winds at Sydney Airport from a westerly direction. This is significantly stronger than the typical June frequency of 15%, contributing to the warm conditions during the month. Five strong wind days were reported at Sydney Airport, slightly above the historical average of 4 days. The windiest day was the 21st, with maximum gusts reaching 91 km/hr at Port Botany and 83 km/hr at Sydney Airport and Kurnell.
