NSW in July 2011: Wettest July since 1950s on Central Coast

Rainfall
NSW recorded an average rainfall of 23.0 mm during July, below the historical average of 39.4 mm. Rainfall was generally above average on the south and central coasts, predominantly due to a coastal ECL during the month, with well above average rainfall in coastal Sydney and the Central Coast. In comparison, totals were average to below average west of the divide, particularly in the Northern Tablelands. The MDB also recorded 23.7 mm during July, below the historical average of 39.7 mm.
The most significant rain event was between the 20th and 23rd associated with an East Coast Low off the coast, which brought several days of heavy rainfall to the south and central coasts, particularly in Sydney. Daily falls reached 130 mm at Terry Hills in Sydney on the 22nd, with four-day totals as high as 296 mm at Castle Cove in Sydney and 248 mm at Newcastle. This resulted in record-breaking July totals at several stations, and the wettest July since at least 1952 at several coastal stations including Sydney and Gosford.
Moderate rain was also recorded in the Snowy Mountains between the 4th and 7th, with totals of 108 mm at Thredbo, associated with strong southerly winds. Much of this fell as snow, with snow levels at Spencers Creek increasing from 64 cm to 159 cm during the first week of July, the highest levels for early July since 1990. Maximum temperatures in NSW were above average during July, at 15.9 °C compared to the historical average of 15.3 °C, the 13th consecutive July with above average maximum temperatures in NSW. Temperatures were generally within a degree of average across the state, with generally above average temperatures in the west but cooler conditions along the coast where rainfall was high.
Minimum temperatures were 0.1 °C below average during July at 3.4 °C. Temperatures were generally within 1 °C of average during the month, with warmer conditions in the south and east of the state and cooler conditions in the north west, particulaly twoards the northern border. Mean temperatures were consequently average during July.
Some sites had their lowest July temperature on record.

Other phenomena
Strong winds were recorded in the Southern and Central Tablelands between the 5th and 10th of the month, reaching 139 km/hr at Mt Boyce on the 5th and 146 km/hr at Thredbo on the 10th. The winds were associated with blizzard conditions in the Snowy Mountains and moderate damage in the Tablelands, including damage to property from falling trees in the Blue Mountains and interruptions to power and train lines. 2500 Requests for Assistance were received by the SES during this event.
An East Coast Low between the 20th and 23rd had maximum wind gusts of up to 118 km/hr at Wattamolla on the 20th and four-day rainfall totals exceeding 200 mm across the Sydney and Central Coast region, associated with minor damage and 1200 Requests for Assistance to the SES.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 August 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
