NSW in August 2011: Warm end to winter

Rainfall

The average rainfall in NSW during August was 37.3 mm, close to the historical average of 37.8 mm. Most of the state recorded close to average rainfall during the month, with moderate falls in the Tablelands due to a front on the 17th to 19th, reaching 78 mm at Hargraves (General Store) on the 18th and record falls for August at Parkes, Tharwa and Murrumburrah. In addition to light rain in southern NSW between the 6th and 9th, this was a welcome relief following dry conditions in inland NSW over the last three months. The Murray Darling Basin also recorded 32.2 mm during August, slightly below the historical average of 37.8 mm.

The wettest area of NSW during August was on the offshore islands, both of which recorded over 200 mm during the month. This was the wettest August since 1990 at Lord Howe Island, and the wettest since 1950 at Norfolk Island. This was followed by the coast, most of which recorded above average rainfall, with particularly heavy totals near the Queensland border including record August rainfall at Kyogle and Nimbin and the wettest since 1908 at Tweed Heads.

The high coastal rain was primarily due to low pressure system on the 20th and 21st, reaching 102.2 mm at Byron Bay on the 21st. This was followed by continued rain for the following days due to onshore winds between the 22nd and 24th. Further moderate falls on the North Coast reached 53 mm at Evans Head on the 28th associated with a low off the coast.

Temperature

The average maximum temperature in NSW during August was 19.7 °C, which is 2.6 °C above the historical average of 17.1 °C and the 6th warmest August on record. Most of the state recorded maximum temperatures in the warmest 10% of years, between 2 and 4 °C above the historical average, although temperatures were closer to average in the far northeast where rainfall was highest.

Temperatures were particularly warm in the Snowy Mountains and Riverina regions, with the warmest August on record at Charlottes Pass by 0.5 °C and the warmest since 1982 at Cabramurra SMHEA, Perisher Valley AWS, Tumbarumba PO and Wagga Wagga AMO. The warm conditions were associated with above average sunshine hours during the month and a particularly warm period during the first week of August, with a high pressure system driving warm northwesterly winds into the state and days more than 8 °C above average across much of NSW between the 2nd and 4th. Further warm days occurred at the end of the month, with much of NSW more than 6 °C above average between the 25th and 28th.

The average minimum temperature was 5.8 °C, which is 1.1 °C above the historical average of 4.7 °C and also the equal 6th warmest on record for August. Temperatures were above average across the state, particularly in the west and along the south coast, associated with particularly warm nights during the first week of the month as well as during the rain event 16-18 August, including the warmest night on record at Thredbo AWS on the 4th. Thredbo additionally recorded its warmest average minimums for August since 1982 this month.

The average temperature during August was consequently the 5th warmest on record at 12.7 °C, 1.8 °C above the historical average of 10.9 °C.

Other phenomena

Strong winds reached 104 km/hr at Wattamolla AWS on the 19th, causing minor damage in the Metropolitan region, while Byron Bay reached 104 km/hr on the 23rd.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Thursday 1 September 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
