Rainfall
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 99.7 mm during February, well above the historical average of 50.7 mm and the 13th wettest on record. Rainfall was above average across most of the state, with the wettest February on record at Cooma, Murrurundi, and Bowning. 26 stations also experienced their wettest February since at least the 1970s, particularly in the northwest, including the wettest February since 1976 at Moree, since 1971 at Gunnedah, and since 1955 at Tamworth. The Murray Darling basin also recorded 79 mm during February, almost twice the historical average of 40.4 mm and the 13th wettest on record.
The first major rainfall event was at the start of the month, as an inland trough system and easterly flow triggered several days of heavy rain over northeastern NSW between the 1st and 3rd of February. Tamworth Airport recorded 121 mm on the 2nd, breaking the previous February record of 111.5 mm at the old site on 20 February 1928, with records also broken at Narrabri, Boggabri, and Nowendoc.
Further moderate rain fell along the east coast between the 8th and 15th, with localised reports of flash flooding, associated with thunderstorms triggered by a further low pressure trough. An additional period of thunderstorm activity was triggered by a low pressure trough between the 17th and 20th, with moderate falls across much of central and eastern NSW, particularly on the 20th and 21st.
From the 27th, a slow-moving low pressure system moved into the state, associated with an upper trough and a moist northerly airstream. This triggered widespread rainfall across southern NSW on the 28th and 29th, including the wettest February day on record at several stations, with daily falls as high as 123 mm at Coolamon on the 29th. At Coolamon, Grong Grong and Mulwala this was the wettest day on record for any month.
Some sites had their highest total February rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest February daily rainfall on record. See a map of rainfall deciles.
Temperature
The statewide average maximum temperature for NSW during February was 29.5 °C, 1.9 °C below the historical average. This is the 7th coldest February on record for NSW, and the coolest since February 2008. The cool conditions were associated with the well above average rainfall and cloudiness during the month, with most of the state recording below average temperatures. Temperatures were coolest in northern and central NSW, with days more than 3 °C below average at areas including Condobolin, Nyngan, and Collarenebri, while Grenfell experienced its coolest February in almost 100 years of record. Temperatures were particularly cool during a rain event at the start of the month, with several stations experiencing their coldest February day on record.
The statewide average minimum temperature was also below average during February, at 16.8 °C compared to the historical average of 17.6 °C, also the coolest February since 2008. Most of the state experienced cooler than average nights, with parts of northwestern NSW more than 1 °C below average. The mean February temperature for NSW was consequently 23.2 °C, 1.3 °C below the historical average and the 8th coldest February on record.
Some sites had their lowest February mean temperature on record. Some sites had their coldest February day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their lowest February mean daily maximum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest February temperature on record.

Other phenomena
Following heavy rain during December and January as well as additional rain in early February, flooding continued in northern NSW during the month. At the beginning of the month, more than ten thousand people remained isolated in northern NSW and the mid north coast, with evacuations ordered for more than 2000 people along the Mehi, Manning, Gwydir and Namoi rivers. Large parts of Moree were flooded, including residential areas and parts of the CBD.
Floodwaters originating in Queensland also progressed through NSW during the month, with many rural areas isolated for most of the month, including Lightning Ridge, Collarenebri, Walgett, Wee Waa and Mungindi. At the end of the month, a heavy rain event in southern NSW also resulted in flooding along the Tumut and Murray rivers on the 28th, with parts of Cooma evacuated. Natural Disasters were declared in 23 Local Government Areas, as a result of the flooding from late January through February.
Several flash flooding events were associated with localised storm activity and heavy rain during February, including near Taree on the 8th, in western Sydney overnight on the 9th, and in Picton on the 10th. Severe storms overnight on the 20th also resulted in flash flooding in several areas of Sydney, including 20 vehicles trapped by floodwaters in Zetland.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 March 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
