Sydney in October 2012: Several hot days and some very cold nights

  • Warmest, driest & sunniest October days since 2007
  • Above average maximum temperatures and the most warm days since 2008
  • Very cold spell on the 11th-12th, snow in the Blue Mountains

Rainfall - Driest October since 2007

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 29.4 mm of rain during October, well below the historical average of 77 mm and the driest October since 2007. The rain fell over ten days, close to normal for October, but only five exceeded 1 mm (average 8 days) and no days reached 10 mm. The wettest day in the city was associoted with a surface trough on the 11th (9.8 mm), while falls south of the city reached 22 mm at Campbelltown on the 13th associated with a southern East Coast Low.

Temperature - Sydney experiences both warm & cold extremes.

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum temperature of 23.3 °C during October, 1.2 °C above the historical average and the warmest October since 2007. The warm temperatures were associated with generally clear, sunny conditions during the month and some very warm events.

There were four days above 30 °C during the month, above the historical average of 1-2 days and the most since 2008. This included two consecutive days above 32 °C on the 4th and 5th; this is only the 15th such spell in October during the past 150 years, and the second earliest on record (following 3-4 October 1942). However, there were ten days below 20 °C, normal for October, with temperatures reaching just 16 °C on the 12th and just 12.2 °C at 3pm, the coldest October afternoon since 22 October 2008.

In comparison, the average minimum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 13.8 °C, close to the historical average of 13.6 °C. Two nights reached 20 °C, the most since 2007, while three nights dropped to 10 °C, the most since 2008. A particularly cold spell occurred as a southern low drove cool air into the state from the 11th; there were two consecutive nights below 9 °C on the 12th and 13th, the first such spell since 11-12 October 2003.

Minimum temperatures were well below average in parts of western and southern Sydney, including the coldest October for Camden since 1986. Richmond dropped to just 3.5 °C on the 13th, its coldest October night since 2003, while snow was reported in parts of the Blue Mountains. The cool nights were also associated with the generally clear conditions during the month.

Some sites had their lowest October mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Other phenomena

The prevailing wind direction at Sydney Airport during October was easterly to southeasterly, with 45% of 3pm winds between E and NE and 48% of 3pm winds between SE and SSW. There were five strong wind days, with a maximum wind gust of 83 km/hr during a cold change on the 22nd and 81 km/hr associated with a southern low on the 12th.

Sydney Airport recorded an average of 8.9 hours of bright sunshine during the month, well above the historical average of 7.8 hours and the sunniest October since 2007. There were three thunderstorms reported at the airport, while snow was reported in the Blue Mountains during a cold snap and East Coast Low on the 11th and 12th.

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with »» are part of a longer accumulation, which is marked like this on the final day. Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. Days marked with - have a rainfall report of zero; days left blank have no rainfall report (which often indicates no rain fell).
This table is very wide; you may have to scroll sideways to see all the days, and you may need to set the paper to 'landscape' to print.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Sydney - Greater Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 November 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
