Rainfall - Dry conditions across the state
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 12.4 mm during October, well below the historical average of 44.4 mm. This is the eighth-driest October on record and the driest since 2006, with most of the state recording below average rainfall including record dry conditions in parts of the Blue Mountains. The Murray-Darling Basin also recorded 14.6 mm, well below the historical average of 40.1 mm.
Some sites had their lowest total October rainfall on record.
Temperature - Warm days, damaging frosts
The statewide average maximum temperature during October 2013 was 2.5 °C above average and the tenth-warmest on record for NSW. Temperatures were well above average across the state, associated with the generally dry, clear conditions, as well as very warm temperatures during periods of northerly winds. Temperatures were warmest in the northeast, while October records were broken at several coastal stations.
Temperatures were more than 10 °C above normal across most of the state on the 10th, including the warmest October day on record for Montague Island. Widespread temperatures more than 10 °C above normal were also recorded on the 21st, with October daily temperature records broken at several stations including Broken Hill and Wilcannia.
The statewide average minimum temperature was 0.2 °C below average, with nights more than 1 °C below average in parts of the southeast. The cooler temperatures were associated with clear conditions as well as several major frost days during the month, with localised records broken on the 4th, 15th, 18th and 25th. Bathurst recorded 9 nights of 0 °C or lower during the month, almost double the previous record of 5 nights in 2012, while Canberra recorded 3 nights below -2 °C (previous record 1 night).
The frosts caused substantial damage to crops in southeast NSW including wine, wheat and canola, which was exacerbated by recent dry conditions and early crop development associated with September warmth. In contrast, several stations in northeast NSW recorded their warmest October night on record during the month, particularly associated with a surface trough and cloudy conditions between the 21st-23rd.
The mean temperature for NSW was consequently 1.1 °C above average, the warmest October since 2008.

Other phenomena - Strong winds and Bushfires
Storms and strong winds
1st - A cold front generated strong winds in southeast NSW, with widespread wind gusts above 90 km/h including 117 km/h at Murrurrundi Gap and gusts over 100 km/h at Braidwood, Bombala and Scone. There were more than 800 requests to the SES, predominantly for downed trees and powerlines, but some significant roof damage was reported including a Mosque in Wyong.
29th - A southerly change generated strong winds in coastal NSW, with widespread thunderstorm activity in eastern NSW between Sydney and Tweed Heads. There were more than 600 requests to the SES associated with roof damage and downed trees, as well as six injuries and reports of 4 cm hail near Tamworth and Port Macquarie.
Bushfires
Bushfire activity during October was widespread and severe, associated with warm, dry conditions during recent months. The majority of fires impacted the coastal strip and Great Dividing Range, particularly between the 17th and 23rd.
More than 200 houses were destroyed in bushfires in the Blue Mountains between the 17th and 20th of October, particularly in the Springwood/Winmalee area, in addition to power and tourism infrastructure and more than 50,000 hectares of bushland.
Fires also caused significant damage in the Port Stephens area from the 13th, with several houses destroyed in the Salt Ash region and the closure of the M1 motorway and Newcastle Airport on the 17th.
A major fire near Balmoral in the Southern Highlands also resulted in widespread evacuations between the 17th and 20th, with more than 15,000 hectares burnt and several buildings destroyed.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 November 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
