Rainfall - Wettest November since 1984

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 192.8 mm of rain during November, more than double the historical average of 83.6 mm. This is the wettest November since 1984, and the tenth-wettest November on record. Rainfall was well above average across the city, with fifteen other stations recording their wettest November since 1984, including Mona Vale, Bankstown and Crounlla.

Most of the rain was associated with a series of complex surface troughs and lows during the middle of the month. The first event occurred between the 10th and 13th, with four-day totals of 78.8 mm at Observatory Hill and up to 104.4 mm at Wahroonga, including daily falls of 45 mm at Audley on the 11th and 53.6 mm at Wahroonga on the 12th.

The second event occurred between the 16th and 19th, as a coastal low pressure system developed from a complex surface troughs. Four-day totals were 99.2 mm at Observatory Hill, reaching 192 mm at Avalon and 173 mm at Hornsby. Particularly heavy daily totals were associated with localised thunderstorm activity, including 96 mm at Avalon on the 16th and 67 mm at Prospect Reservoir on the 19th.

Finally, localised thunderstorms developed between the 21st and 23rd associated with a coastal surface trough, with daily falls reaching 42.4 mm at Badgerys Creek on the 23rd. In total, there were 15 rain days at Sydney Observatory Hill, slightly above average for November (12 days), of which seven recorded at least 10 mm, the most since 1995 (average 2-3 days).

Some sites had their highest total November rainfall for at least twenty years.

Temperature - Mild conditions across the city

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum temperature of 24.0 °C during November, 0.4 °C above the historical average, with temperatures slightly above average across the city. Temperatures were warmest at the start of the month, reaching 34.2 °C on the 3rd and 33.3 °C on the 9th, before mid-month rainfall and easterly winds brought milder days to the city.

While temperatures were above average, the average maximum temperature during November was cooler than the record-breaking warmth of September (24.4 °C) and October (25.7 °C), only the second such November on record (with 1998).

The average minimum temperature was 16.4 °C, 0.8 °C above the historical average. Only six nights dropped below 15 °C during the month (average 11 nights), while two nights remained above 20 °C (average 1 night). The coldest night was on the 6th, with temperatures dropping to 11.8 °C at Observatory Hill and 5.3 °C at Richmond, its coldest November night since at least 1953.

The mean temperature was consequently 20.2 °C, 0.6 °C above the historical average.

Other phenomena - Severe thunderstorms

The prevailing wind at Sydney Airport was easterly, with 47% of 3 pm winds between S and SE and 43% of 3pm winds between E and N; this is slightly more southeasterly than normal for November. There was an average of 7.7 hours of bright sunshine during the month, close to the historical average of 7.6 hours.

There were five days with thunder reported at the airport, with widespread thunderstorms across the Sydney basin during 15-16 and 21-23 November. On the 18th, a short-lived (EF1) tornado impacted Hornsby in northern Sydney, causing damage to a shopping centre, train station and TAFE, as well as downed trees, car damage, and minor injuries.

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with »» are part of a longer accumulation, which is marked like this on the final day. Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. Days marked with - have a rainfall report of zero; days left blank have no rainfall report (which often indicates no rain fell).
This table is very wide; you may have to scroll sideways to see all the days, and you may need to set the paper to 'landscape' to print.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 December 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
