New South Wales in June 2015: Wet in the west; temperatures near normal

Above to very much above average rainfall fell in western and northern NSW during June, including areas with long-term rainfall deficiencies in the north of the State. Temperatures were close to average for the month, with overnight temperatures 1 to 2 °C above average in the north.

  • Above average rainfall in the west
  • Temperatures close to average
  • Slow start to snow season

The NSW statewide average rainfall was 26% above the historical average for June with above to very much above average rainfall recorded west of the Divide. Along the coast rainfall totals for June were closer to average. The most significant rainband which brought widespread rain across much of the state was between the 15th and 19th of the month when a low pressure trough associated with complex low crossed the State. Inverell and Garah, in the northeast of the state recorded their highest daily rainfall totals for June on the 17th while Griffith set a new record for June monthly rainfall. Bourke recorded 111 mm for the month - the third highest June total on record (using combined data from the Airport and Post Office sites) and only the third time that the June monthly total has exceeded 100 mm. The previous occasion on which June rainfall at Bourke exceeded 100 mm was in 1948. Another low brought significant rainfall to parts of western and northern NSW on the 24th and 25th with daily totals exceeding 50 mm in Lightning Ridge, while localised severe thunderstorms caused flash flooding in Newcastle on the 26th.

The statewide average maximum temperature was about 0.3 °C above average, with the east mostly above average and the west mostly below. Minimum temperatures were about 0.7 °C above average with above average nights across the northern half of the state and below average nights in the southeast. The warmest temperatures for the month were on the 8th and 9th, associated with a high pressure system over the State, with widespread areas recording temperatures at least 4 °C above average. The coolest temperatures were recorded at the start of the month associated with strong southerly flow over the State. Minimum temperatures across much of inland NSW on the 2nd were more than 4 °C below average, with Bombala in the south recording its lowest June temperature on record on the 22nd.

Although some snow fell early in the month, warmer than average temperatures have since caused this early snow to melt. The Bureau of Meteorology does not routinely monitor snow depth, but reports from Snowy Hydro Ltd show the depth at Spencers Creek at the end of the month was zero, an uncommon occurrence for this time of year.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Wednesday 1 July 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
