New South Wales in April 2016: Warm and dry conditions continue

New South Wales recorded its second-warmest April for both statewide average maximum and mean temperatures. Over night temperatures were also very warm, fifth-warmest on record. April was also the ninth-driest on record with large parts of the state recording less than 40% of their average rainfall.

  • Second-warmest April for mean and maximum temperatures
  • Fifth-warmest April for minimum temperatures
  • Late season warmth sets temperature records

New South Wales recorded its second-warmest April on record for both average maximum and minimum temperatures. Maximum temperatures were 3.3°C above the historical average and the warmest since 2005. A number of sites recorded their highest April temperature on record, mostly on 6 April. This was also a late season temperature record for a number of sites across New South Wales including Cobar, Taralga, Camden throughout parts of the Hunter. In northern New South Wales Mungindi, Glenn Innes and Brewarrina also set late season records the following day.

Maximum temperatures were warmest in the northern parts of the state with parts of the northwest recording their highest April mean daily maximum temperature on record. Very warm sea surface temperatures contributed, particularly along the coast and for Lord Howe and Norfolk islands which both set maximum and mean temperature records for the month.

New South Wales statewide average rainfall was 64% below the historical average and the driest since 2013. Most of the interior of New South Wales recorded little to no rainfall during most of April until the end of the month. The passage of a low pressure trough on the 29 - 30th April brought widespread rainfall to inland New South Wales with falls in excess of 25 mm west of the Great Dividing Range. The highest falls during the month were recorded along the coast, particularly in the north, however compared to average very few areas recorded above average rainfall. Large areas of the state recorded rainfall 40% below their April average partly associated with the passage of several high pressure systems across the state which brought clear conditions and blocked any rain bearing systems from the south during most of the month.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 May 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
