Sydney in April 2016: Warmest April day on record
April was a very warm month for Sydney with locations in both coastal and western regions recording their warmest April day on record. Many areas recorded the warmest maximum and minimum temperatures for at least 20 years, with Sydney Observatory Hill temperatures ranking in the top five warmest on record. It was mostly dry across the metropolitan region with the exception of some coastal fringes which recorded above average rainfall.

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded its fifth-warmest maximum temperature on record for April 2016. Average maximum temperatures were 2.3°C above the historical average. Temperatures have been persistently warm, not dropping below 20°C since January 2016. Stations across both eastern and western Sydney set new daily highest on record April maximum temperature on 6 April. Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 34.2°C with both Penrith and Richmond recording 36.6°C on the day. A number of stations also set late season temperature records on the same day, including Sydney Airport, Parramatta North, Bankstown and Prospect Reservoir with temperatures in excess of 34°C. Nights were also very warm and rank as the equal-warmest on record (2.2°C above the historical average).
April was a mostly dry month across the greater Sydney region with the exception of some coastal fringes. Sydney Observatory hill recorded rainfall total of 155.0 mm during April, 120% of the historical average. The vast majority of sites in Sydney, away from the coastal fringes, recorded below average rainfall, most recording less than 30% of the April average. The above average rainfall in Sydney Observatory Hill was mostly due to very heavy rainfall recorded on 4 April, with 80 mm falling in just 3 hours, the second-heaviest such total for April in Sydney. This was associated with a low pressure trough and on-shore flow. For most of the month, April was a dry and sunny month recording 7.2 hours of sunshine, above the historical average for April.

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 May 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
